leaving battery in a laptop ........

Hi folks,

We purchased a new Toshiba for my darling wife. Now she's better equipped than I am. ;-)

It will be used primarily at home via the AC adapter unit.

What the current thinking on removing the battery or leaving it in?

I think a lot of people leave the battery out and keep it plugged in all the time. I have a Toshiba and I was going to leave mine out, but the battery is the cover and I didn't want to leave the contacts exposed.

Read the manual and follow Toshiba's recommendation for your laptop.

Mostly they want you to leave it installed. Last toshiba here said leave it in.. Toshiba before that said take it out and store it at half charge or something. Exercise it every few months.

Laptop Recalibration As a laptop gets older, it starts to slow down a little. You may notice that pages load slower, videos take longer to start playing, and general slowness of the machine. Unfortunately, thousands of people a year replace their laptop batteries without performing any monthly recalibration on it at all. If you want to get the best performance out of your laptop, here are a few steps to follow. - Charge your laptop's battery all the way to 100%. -Once the laptop is fully charged, unplug it and let the battery drain. Feel free to use the laptop during this period, as it will help it drain more quickly. Once you see that the battery is almost empty, save your work and close any open pages. Then let the laptop shut itself off. -Let the dead battery sit for about 5 or 6 hours, or overnight. This will help eliminate any leftover charge the battery may have, and lets the battery start over from zero. -After you've let your laptop sit, plug it back in and let it charge all the way to 100% before using it again. Battery maintenance is an important process that many people neglect. Recalibration should be done monthly if possible to ensure best results. If done on a regular basis, you should notice greatly extended battery life on your computer, and hopefully postpone the purchase of any replacement parts.

You should never have to remove and replace a battery to get it to charge and when fully charged, I would expect the light to remain a solid green not a flashing amber..are the specs of the replacement battery the same as the original..Seen all kinds of strange things happen with non-OEM replacement batteries

A risk with third party batteries is that they not-infrequently are lower quality and have less capacity than OEM versions. I personally never take the chance. A dead battery in a laptop is like a needed major repair on a car - you go the cheaper route if the rest still works fine, or it's a good excuse to buy a whole new replacement. But even when going the cheaper route and getting a replacement battery, i think it's a false economy to buy an aftermarket brand. Capacity is rated in milliAmp hours, for laptops it's usually a number in the single digit thousands ( 3000-9999 mAh hours)

I leave mine in (but 'exercise' it now and then like mikie advised). I think my original Toshiba battery lasted about a year and a half. Then I bought a battery from a local computer guy, and it's the most awesome battery, lasting and lasting - better than Toshiba's imo.

The reason I bought the battery from someone else, too, is that the store where I bought my laptop from would honour their warranty for the battery and give me a free replacement, but they wanted to send the laptop away to analyze the battery/my laptop, etc. It's like they didn't believe me that the battery was dead - ha. So I bought a different battery altogether. Probably more than you wanted to know. lol

Batteries in my Toshiba's lasted longer than the laptops... 4yrs they still had half life/run time. Seldom used on battery excpt for moments and when I pulled the plug on purpose.

I just pulled the plug to 10% charge on my laptop now.. and let it charge up fully... lenovo.. it has a Energy Management program.. that allows you to select the battery life mode based on use... and always plugged in mode it drains the battery to 50%.. and then when it power level hits 45% it charges it to full,, and drains it to 50% again. And that takes a long time to lose charge from 50 to 45% .. and I'm writing too much.

We need to download their manual. Just yesterday, she started setting the new one up.

She should get to the manual today.

She's replacing a 7 year old Toshiba with 256MG of RAM and now has 6GIG. That plus improved processor speed - what a difference, out of the dark ages.
