display driver problem

I have a lenovo laptop that runs xp pro. I few days ago the resolution changed and I got a message saying the graphics driver wasn't working. After trying several times to update the driver, I reloaded xp pro. It worked for a few hours and now I get a message saying the display driver is not working "ati2dvag". I have been searching and can't find were I can update this driver. On the amd website I try to download it but it tells me it can't find my os.

Googling I see that lots of people have had this issue but can't find a fix.

Any ideas?

What's the model # of the Laptop? Lenovo xxxxxx

What's the name of the display adapter? As listed in device manager? We might be able to get from the ATI site since it appears to be an ATI adapter.

Have you visited Lenovo site to look for driver?

To enter device Manager in XP open the Run box copy this text in bold devmgmt.msc paste it into the run box and click ok. Once in there look under Display adapters and give us the entire name listed. While you're in there right click on it now choose uninstall. Reboot the computer. Windows will reinstall the driver for you. Sometimes this will resolve an issue or 2 but it may not.

I read a bit about it.. many say its an overheating problem. Hard to clean out the dust bunnies in a laptop.

FWiW The Lenovo OneKey Recovery. It loads its own recovery environment but it does use the laptop display... and there are several mouse clicks to be able to use it. Lenovo has a couple of Recovery partitions & will load the operating system to the drives to a like new state. It also has restore backup and images capabilities if you set it up to do so from within windows originally. Sounds like the display or display adapter is bad, as it wont even run the display from outside of windows correctly. Or possibly the display drivers have been given a virus - Hooking up a separate monitor, if it works..run a virus scan - Or use the OneKey recovery to bring it back to the like new state, both might be might be worth a try.. before returning it to some distant repair center. I surely would do it here. The OneKey virus scan is actually McAfee that updates and scans boot sectors of all partitions and offers a quick or full everything scan... very long scans both of them. Its nice to have made the Recovery DVD Disks and keep those stored away safely too, for when the hard drive fails or becomes not accessible.

From what you've described, my reactions are: The program you're using (Secunia) is unnecessary. I wouldn't spend another second using it or opening it. Programs update themselves. Driver Restorer sounds like a come on, I'd delete it and pay no further attention to it. If a driver needs updating, the periodic update sessions from MS will handle it. If your PC is working adequately with its hardware, the topic of drivers can be ignored. Java has nothing to do with the display's general performance. Maybe some part of the screen or what controls it is failing? Is your PC going into some kind of a sleep cycle, does the screen brighten if you touch a key? Maybe you should take the PC to a repair shop or replace it if it's old?

Thanks, weedmeister. Heard that the display on the echelon may get cloudy with humidity and the readout has been known to "streak" with lines through it. Since we live near the beach, that worries me. I agree - the readout isn't the main feature, but I'd be mad if my new grill was built-in and I had to look at a malfunctioning display or continually invest money in replacing/repairing the display after the year warranty expired. Sounds like they now have the option to order it without the front electronics so are probably going to try that version.

suggestion if you don't want to lock the door just lock down your admin account on the pc and set up a guest or limited user account so they can use the pc but not be able to do anything that would install programs or mess it up too bad. Put a super hard password on your admin account.

Its an IBM thinkpad T30 2366. I went to the lenovo website but there were no display drivers listed that seemed relevent.

The display driver is ATI Mobility Radeon 7500.

Odd thing is .... I left the laptop on last night. This morning there was a message that a security update was installed and the laptop rebooted.

It's fine now. But its been ok before and then the resolution changed. So I'm not sure the issue is resolved.

Every page at lenovo support was very very slow loading when i was there. I guess its a long wait to enter China, as they pound on your router trying to be sneaky looking for something.

I removed the driver then tried to download it from the lenovo website. It would not download, no message just a blank screen. I then restarted and it seems to be OK.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Hopefully the issue is solved.
