Quad vs. dual core?

I don't play any game except Solitaire, don't Skype and don't do much with photos. I spend a lot of time surfing the internet for general information--I always seem to have something I want to learn about. I love email but don't do any social networking--either on the computer or my very basic cell phone. Don't even text. I do as much of my banking on-line as possible and I do shop quite a bit on-line. I live out in the country and often buying on-line is cheaper than driving to Syracuse or Rochester. So--I have been advised by a really good computer tech, who recently came to my home to solve several problems, that when I get a new tower I should get 6 G RAM, at least 500 on a hard drive and a quad core processor. Is paying for the quad instead of a cheaper dual core processor likely to be something I appreciate. I am impatient and if it speeds thing up I am for it. Clearly, I am not equipped to make an intelligent decision by myself. All advice will be welcome.

Thanks, Nancy
