Java Problems - can't access, can't uninstall

I think my problems started after updating Java (to version 7 u 9) on Thursday. I was not able to run a streaming stock application that I usually can run. (Windows XP, Firefox).

The Ameritrade website ran a compatibility check and reported that the java plugin might not be configured properly. It suggested going to the control panel - clicking Java Plug-in - clicking the browser table to make sure the appropriate boxes fro teh browser I use are checked.

But when I went to the control panel and clicked the java icon, nothing happened. I can't get Java to open. I used Javara to uninstall old programs - but when I use it to search for new programs, there does not seem to be a version for a 32-bit Windows XP system.

Anyway - Ameritrade next suggested that the java plug-in might be corrupted - and to click the java plug-in to untinstall. But again, nothing happens when I click the java icon on the control panel.

Then ameritrade said that if I'm using Firefox, I might also need to uninstall and reinstall firefox in order to reinstall Java. (I should know this by now, but I have no idea where to go to uninstall firefox - and where I'd go to reinstall. What's the order of operations for that?)

I have a vague recollection that Winpatrol might have warned me about a start up program (which may have been java) and I hastily said not to let it run at start up. I am wondering if this is my problem. And if so, how do I undo it.

I also tried to run the online secunia scan - and it said that the java applet might not be running in my browser. Check to see if Java is installed - and if it is, click ok to continue. I did not click okay to continue bc. it does seem I'm having some type of Java problem - I just don't know what and how to fix it.

I did go the control panel - and see the the following Java programs.:

java 7 Update 9 (which I believe is the current version). When I click for more information, it says "used rarely." Does this mean this is that it never installed properly? I did trying clicking the downloaded Java 7update9 program again to see if it would install properly - but nothing happened.

I also have the Java auto updater and

Java (TM) 6 update 29 (which also says rarely used).

So I don't know how to proceed? Do I try to uninstall all three Java programs from add-remove programs? Should I download a new version first? If so, can somebody provide a link since I can't find one for Windows XP 32-bit?

Is Firefox even an issue here? Will I need to uninstall and reinstallFF?

When I go to that page, it does not list my system information.

So I clicked each additional suggestion. No luck.

Specifics are:
The Firefox plugin is enabled.

Nothing happens when I try to open the Java panel. It won't open.

The instructions for clearing the cache do not seem right. When I go to the Edit button, I do not have a + or option to expand. So I could not do that one. I did try to find it through tools - options - advanced - network. It says I have no cache being stored for on or offline (I had just run ccleaner before =- so that cleared the cache, I think). I still selected clear now - but I couldn't tell if anything happened.

So all the options either showed no problem =- or I couldn't not execute them.

Any pointers would be great. Thanks.

@fruitjarfla. purposes Great for Internet connection issues! One thing nice about .bat files is windows will run them. In the .bat file between the stars, it's just a set of commands that windows will recognize. You must use Notepad to copy it into to run the file. The first thing it does is checks the Host file, the attributes -h -s -r. Then it checks the local host 127.0.0.1, all computers use that as a local host, that's your home. Then the rest of the commands in the .bat file are straight forward as seen. ********************** ipconfig /release ipconfig /renew ipconfig /flushdns netsh winsock reset all netsh int ip reset all shutdown -r -t 1 **************************** First it releases the IP address. Next it renews it, in other other words it forces windows or the modem / router to obtain a new IP#. From you Internet provider. Then it flushes the DNS, Domain name server. In a lot of situations you can connect to the internet, but you can't download a web page, that is sometimes caused by a DNS problem or issue. Then it resets the winsock files those are all internet connection related. Last the very end of the bat file shutdown -r -t 1This command reboots windows or restarts it. Revo uninstaller is sort of a combined way to uninstall programs and clean up the registry for that programs left overs and some of the left over files/folders it might leave. It's not always 100% effective but its better than windows uninstall - which is really just running the programmers uninstaller. You can try to use revo... I always run it on its most aggressive scan. . To me it sounds like you might need to reinstall AVG 12 the older version..... disable it.... uninstall it maybe with Revo first... then follow up with the AVG uninstall tool .. most want you to run that tool from safe mode. Hi, Mikie. I didn't realize I could go to the Java control panel. There was a selection for temporary internet files - with a warning that only advanced users should delete files or modify settings. But I clicked "view" anyway to take a look. It brought up a box with a heading that said Java Cache Viewer. But all five selections from the drop down menu - starting with applications - brought up an empty box. And the top of the box said installed size 0.0kb and Cached size 0.0KB. So there didn't seem to be anything to clear or delete. The other option from the java control panel under temporary internet files, is settings. When I click settings, it brings up a box that says temporary file settings - and an option to hit delete. But I got scared to hit delete after the warning. Is that the spot in the control panel that you suggest I do delete? Should I select "delete files?" ------------------------ So next I looked for a shortcut - and don't have one on the desktop. But I had one in the start menu. I clicked on it, hit properties and it brought up several Secunia files. When I moused over them they were all dated October 2011. So clearly my last install yesterday - which indicated that it was removing earlier versions - did not remove this version. Even the one in the system tray - when I click 'about" it also dates this as October, 2011. When I right click and select open (for the Secunia PSI file), it opens the box for a moment - but then the box disappears). Anybody know if 2.0.0.4003 is the latest version? When I look at the Secunia file I downloaded yesterday, it says version 2.0.0.4003 - and is dated may 8, 2012. I'm thinking I should go back to the properties and select uninstall. Should I uninstall? I thought I had uninstalled when I clicked yesterday's download - and it prompted me to first select that it uninstall previous versions. (By the way, I had previously in the fall, tried removing the Secunia program with add/remove programs - and redownloaded, but that didn't work.) So is it possible that I still have a bad version from Oct. 2011 - that's preventing successful downloads? and isn't uninstalling? Help. Thanks for responding. I just looked at the programs in the Uninstall window, and the only one I don't recognize is UPSMON Plus for Windows. Maybe it has something to do with my UPS account . . . in any case, it was installed in 2010, so it probably has nothing to do with this. A little while ago I was able to get to the KT without incident. I'm hoping this lasts. Thanks again.

Have you given any thought of using REVO to uninstall the Java entries? If it were me I would do them all in Advanced Mode starting with the newest first as that started the concern. I would then follow up with CCleaner's registry tool removing only remaining Java entries, if any present. No guessing and use the backup when offered. And finally a fresh install from a trusted site such as Filehippo.

As to the WP question. If it was a request for permission for a startup entry it would most likely be the scheduler which is not imperative. Anything else would most likely be an IE Helper.

If I'm understanding correctly, you have more than one version of Java on your computer? You are only supposed to have one version at any time, and the latest would be version 7 update 9, I believe. That's the one I updated to yesterday.

So, having more than one version of Java might be causing the problems? Personally, I would just uninstall them all from the control panel if you can, and reinstall the Java 7 update 9 using the link provided by DA, above. If you run the test, I think it will tell you which download to install for your 32-bit computer.

Thanks everyone. I would not have figured this out on my own.

I did use Revo Uninstaller to remove all traces of the Java programs. Damcoy - thanks for explicitly telling me to use advanced mode. I did - and let Revo remove leftover files and registry items. (While I was at it, I had Revo uninstall a corrupt version of Secunia PSI 2 - that I was not able to successfully remove before).

Then I restarted the computer - ran Ccleaner (but not the registry - bc. when I went to the registry, it wasn't clear to me what I would select). So I downloaded a fresh version of Java -and now everything is working well.

Glad to hear that all is well. Sometimes there's nothing better than a fresh start, and Revo is great for uninstalling offending programs.

As to CC, you chose wisely. Never uninstall anything you are not sure of. As I said, no guessing.
