what software do i want - business contact manager

I am not the most tech savvy person - for my job I have been looking for something like Business Contacts Manger, an add on for Outlook that is supposed to organize your emails and other documents. However it's set up to be more like something a sales and marketing business would use, whereas the need at my place of work is for just some detailed tracking contacts with clients and possibly some system of recording billing time.

Supposedly BCM can be customized, but dang if I can find how to do this ANYWHERE. Yes, I have been all over the Microsoft site.

Which leads to a larger question. WHERE can you go for info about just what software is even available out there and what might be the best for any given purpose? I could also use some sort of registration system which links to an access database. Would consider either free or something that costs $$$
