As ravencajun knows, WinPatrol is my favorite security program. Scotty has been my "Windows Watchdog" since Windows 95.

In addition to appreciating the program features, Bill Pytlovany is tops in my book. He has had numerous offers to include a toolbar with WinPatrol -- something that after doing the math would have allowed him to retire several years ago. However, he couldn't go against his principles and continues to decline those offers. He is a one-man operation, personally responding to e-mail support requests.

Bill told me he doesn't think he'll be offering this kind of special again so if you've been wanting a WinPatrol PLUS license, this would be the time to splurge and spend that 99 cents!

Remember to wait after payment for code creation page and, although you can contact Bill if you lose your PLUS code, make a note of it somewhere because it doesn't expire. I don't often use Windows but I respect the fact that Bill put principle before greed.

The much larger and better known commercial providers often do updates daily. Does a one horse shop have the resources to obtain and implement defenses against risks on a similar timetable?

If one already has capable security software with intrusion protection, is a second program like this necessary? (The CNET review suggests it's not appropriate for novice users, and ranks it 19th in popularity on their site)

WP is a long time, respected, useable application. Only in recent years has its use been expanded to system protection. Originally it focused on system reporting and tweaking.

For gosh sakes in this case we are talking about a quality application for ninety-nine cents. I see no purpose to discourage its purchase and use. Every little bit helps.

Absolutely it is highly recommended by the support forums, adding one more layer of protection of security is a plus.
Bill is an awesome guy and is more than capable of maintaining his programs. His integrity is well known and appreciated.
At 99c to me it's a no brainer I definitely picked it up for my new pc.
In general it runs fine out the box on default. It's job is to let you know anytime anything tries to make changes to the pc, you can choose.

My antivirus program does that and also compares it real-time to its database of safe vs dangerous exe files to say if the subject file is ok to proceed with or not.

I come to a different "no-brainer" conclusion - I think having multiple programs doing the same job only slows down a PC without adding value. Something that's free or cheap is of no value to me if I don't want or need it. I prefer to have the right tool for a given job and then avoid having any duplication. If one program or system can competently handle several tasks, all the better. That works for me, I know others can have a different view.

Then this might be the best "no-brainer". If you don't want it don't buy it.

@snidley -- You are certainly entitled to your opinion. However, there is no reason to be rude and refer to BillP Studios as a "one horse shop".

You obviously have no interest in WinPatrol or know anything about the program or the developer. WinPatrol is not an antivirus or anti-malware program. It is a system monitor, with numerous features -- features many people find very helpful.

Regardless of how good it is, no antivirus or anti-malware software ever has definitions for every piece of malware. Having a warning with a drive-by install or hidden toolbar/BHO from WinPatrol; removing stubborn programs from start-up, being warned if A/V has been disabled, and so many other features are just a few of the features of WinPatrol.

Your choice is clear. My choice is that I'll keep Scotty, the Windows Watchdog keeping an eye on things.

Run it in addition to any programs you are now using. It seems to be a lifetime subscription so you would download it to a new computer and put in the code you will get when you buy win patrol plus.

I have a laptop and a desktop. Would I buy 2 different single programs each for 99 cents? Also, when I buy them, should I purchase them from the computer I will be downloading to (2 different ones) so the downloads are installed on each one? Eventually, when I get these computers replaced, I hope to be able to move the Win Patrol Plus to them.

yes you can use it on your new pc when you buy it you pick a name to use and it will give you a code specific to your name. Once you get the new pc you just install the free version of winpatrol then hit the plus tab and it will ask for that name and code just enter that and it will be the full plus version on the new pc.

This is not an antivirus or antimalware program as Corrine mentioned it is to run in addition to any of those programs what it does is say you happen to go to a website that has a malicious "drive by" infection that tries to install on your pc it will alert you that something is trying to make changes to your computer and ask if you want to allow it or not.
It is similar to how a firewall will sometimes ask you what you want to do.
In some cases you may not know the right answer but it has a feature that you can check and see what is recommended or you can do a quick google search if you are not sure.
It may take some time to learn what things are to be allowed and what are not but it definitely will help you understand what is happening on your pc. And of course if you find it not to your liking you can disable it or remove it and you only lost 99c. Corrine has a good tutorial on LzD winpatarol forums about how to remove it should anyone need to. Very simple.

For anyone that misses the sale there is of course the free version of winpatrol, the benefit of the plus version is that it is running in real time so if it sees anything happening it tells you immediately.

IF it is not for you, you can simply walk on by.

debi when you purchase it on Bill's site it will give you the pop up with the exe for the program you can download that to the pc or laptop that you want to have it on and then go to that exe and double click it to install it or you can copy it to a usb flash drive and move it to another pc if you need to. But when it gives you that info it will provide a Code you need to write down the name you used and that code, because you will need that when you want to use it on another pc.

So later if you have a new pc you don't have to move anything you just go to Bill's site and download the free version of winpatrol that is always there. In that version there is a tab that says PLUS when you click on that tab it will ask for your name and Code you put that info in and voila you have the full plus version on the new pc not having to move anything from the old one! Super easy.

When you choose the location on your pc to put that exe file be sure you remember where you put it so you can then go to it to finish your install and set up. If you look at the links in my original post I have a lot of good tutorials on just how it will look step by step. It is really one of the easiest programs to get and install.

If you already have the free version of WinPatrol installed, all you need do is launch WinPatrol and click the About/PLUS tab. Just enter your new PLUS code and the PLUS features will automatically be activated!!!

If you do not have WinPatrol installed, as ravencajun said, you can download it at the time of purchasing the PLUS code or just go to WinPatrol.com and download it. You'll download the "free" version and then add your PLUS code after installing it.

Its that simple!

You're right and that's why I asked about it (rather than walking by). The descriptions in response made me think that what I already have is more capable (because of the real-time look-up feature) and I said so. Nothing more or less.

You said one-man operation, I said one horse shop. These are synonyms in my neck of the woods, there's nothing rude about either term. It could have been a relevant factor as a resource question (as I said), but the program doesn't use timely updates, it would seem not to matter.
