Time for a new desktop

I need some advice and opinions. My desktop... Dell XPS 400 with WinXP has had a hard drive failure. I cannot get it to boot. I used it daily for 6 years and have transferred all my docs, pics ans favorites to my laptop just last week. I was thinking about buying a new desktop anyway.

Here is what I am looking at, Dell Desktop XPS 8500

~Win7 with the upgrade to Win8

~Upgraded Memory 12GB

~Upgraded Hard Drive 2TB

~Upgraded video card (NVIDA GeForce GT 640)

My questions, are my upgrades over the top for an everyday user? I am wanting to be set for at least another 6 yrs. I mostly visit these forums, post pictures, play games on sites like Pogo, shop the web, I do download some games.

Do you think my Dell monitor will be compatible? It is the 24" flat screen that came with my last computer. Still works fine.

Should I order recovery disks?

I didn't see any options for a Media Center...I use the computer like a second TV at times. Is this automatic now?

Should I expect wireless connections to be built in? It is on this laptop.

My price comes out to $1024.98 with my options.

I'll link to the Dell site.

Dell is now offering an XPS 8500 on a pre-order with Win8. Not sure I want to go there yet and they only have a few options available anyway.

Any other desktops I should look at?

Thanks!

Nancy
