Can I Capture Streaming Video from Hulu, abc.com, fox.com etc

I just finished reading through the thread on capturing video from Youtube. I used the typing abc in the URL before the word Youtube. What a great tool.

I'd love to do that with other streaming video and have had no luck. Specifically, I missed this last week's episode of Modern Family (episode 2) - which I can only find on Hulu (and perhaps is on abc.com itself). But I hate watching tv on my computer. I'd love to watch on my regular tv with my family. If I can capture it on my pc's hard drive, I have several options for getting it to my television (either burn a DVD or convert to mp4 and stream to my Tivo). But I can't figure out a way to capture the video. I've had similar wishes for episodes I've missed of In Treatment and American Idol.

I actually tried a few times to get help on the Tivo forums - but the answers there suggested there was no easy solution short of getting involved with bit torrents or writing your own codecs (?) - all options above my head.

But in reading the Youtube thread, it mentioned a few other programs that I was hoping might be able to capture these television shows.

http://www.savevid.com/ was mentioned by Cheryl. I clicked the link and it looks like the free trial is limited in terms of what it captures (like youtube - which I can already do). They sell the software for $39.95. I'd be fine with paying that if it actually captured the shows I want - but I can't tell if it will.

Also, Ravencajun mentioned one that I haven't been able to load (server errors I think). It's

http://keepvid.com/. I can't get that to load or get the FAQ to load (http://keepvid.com/faq). I don't know what the problem is. Can this program keepvid do what I'm looking for.

So basically I wonder if savevid or keepvid can capture shows from hulu and major networks (and HBO?). Or are there other programs that do.

Lynn about the easiest way is to just use one of the many firefox add-ons that capture video, I had one I used on one of my computers but now I can not remember which one it was but there are many you can try several, here is a link to the search on firefox

this is one that has been around for a while and many people like it, allows download and conversion with one tool, it has a website you can utilize also, just click on the link which is on this firefox add on page

Thanks Raven. I've spent some time looking at all of these and I'm not sure any of them will work for what I want. Lots of them capture video from Youtube, metacalfe, etc - but none of these mention capturing video from Hulu, or the major network's own sites. Two of them - video search and downloader and multimediawebrecorder might. At least their description and reviews don't rule out the possibility. And for the webrecorder one, folks mention it captures everything (of course, I don't know if they've tried the kind of shows I'm hoping to capture). So I've downloaded both and will experiment with them over the weekend.

I already had downloadhelper - but it never helped with any of the sites I wanted. It has a long list of sites it works with - but there's no easy way to search other than scrolling through many, many sites- the majority of which mean nothing to me. Just doesn't seem very well organized - and it may just be outdated at this point.

The MediaConvertor doesn't seem compatible with this latest version of Firefox.

I'll report back if I have luck - but I'm not optimistic. Any other ideas still welcomed.

I had the same problem once, and eventually traced it to, of all things, the particular type of CFL light bulb I had nearby interfering with the remote-control receiver on the TV, causing it to change channels or turn on or off by itself. I noticed it only happened when the light was on, so I changed bulbs and it went away. Changed the bulb back temporarily after a month just to be sure I had it right, and the problem reoccurred. I also have a compact-fluorescent light bulb in my bedroom that sometimes sets off the smoke detector when I turn on the light. I had to move the smoke detector. I don't know what the deal is with these things, but I don't want to switch back to incandescent bulbs and use 4x the electricity, and LEDs are still too expensive. I don't have a DVR but am thinking about a Magnavox MDR515H/F7, a DVR designed for recording over-the-air/antenna programs, and can also burn DVDs of anything you want to save permanently or give to someone else. It's affordable and easy to use; too bad it's not HD. Another approach that's becoming popular is to use a computer set up specifically for TV viewing, a sort of uber-DVR. These are called home theater PCs (HTPC). Or I could just stop watching TV and do something else....

I dropped cable and satellite about 10 years ago and no regrets. Now with digital TV there's more channels with better programming to watch so I generally have enough to feed my TV need. I justified broadband several years back and that's been worthwhile. I needed it for work and justified it that it was a lot of entertainment to cover for lack of cable/satellite. It's been fine. I watch a lot of stuff on the internet and I have a relatively slow broadband service. Nobody can make your decision for you. Check out what's on antenna and learn to search the internet. You'd be surprised what you can find on there. I watch lots of movies and shows and can avoid trash like Duggers, Dancing and Degeneres. And I can skip a lot of commercials which is a great thing during political campaigns! The other advantage is if I'm distracted, need to use the bathroom, answer the door/phone, doze off or something, I can pause and come back and watch it.

I have a smart TV. I also have a Roku box that I used with a previous TV. We have Hulu plus. We have Netflix. We have Cable TV. We have a DVR. Cable TV and the DVR takes care of most of our needs for TV shows. Hulu plus takes care of a few shows that take up overlapping timespots. We can only record 2 shows at once. If there is a third one we can usually get it from Hulu plus. But not all networks are supported on Hulu plus. Cable costs $51/month (TV+locals+DVR); then add Netflix and Hulu plus. I'm not really trying to reduce costs. I just want access to all the TV shows that we regularly watch. Some are not available on Hulu plus. Some shows will show up on Hulu plus but if you try to watch them you will be taken to the networks website to watch only on your computer. I don't want to watch them on the computer, I want to watch them on TV. I don't order online enough to justify Prime free shipping. I no longer read ebooks. Haven't read an actual book in years. I get all my music from Youtube. So I just can't justify having Prime. Pooh Bear

Thanks for the recs, I love quirky movies. I found that Ricky Gervais review interesting. I felt the same way as the reviewer, just an excuse for RG to revel in his own snark, but hubs loves that show, one of the few British things I've watched that he likes too. As an anglophile, I can snark with the best of them, but a little of that goes a long way for me, but hubs just loves snark. BTW, snark is a combination of the word "snide" and "remark." Snide remarks. Snide means derogatory in an underhanded way. Had to clarify this with hubs when he snarked that I didn't know what the word meant when I told him I wasn't a fan of it. It's a too easy laugh, IMHO. But from time to time RG is great, don't get me wrong . . . Maybe it got better. I found the beginning way too self indulgent. I'm not watching anything new, but exploring native landscaping and restoration podcasts right now. I've got to find something. I binged "Kim's Convenience" and "Corner Gas" for my modest Canadian humor fix. To me, a modest joke is a fine art, to poke fun at something but not be mean about it takes real skill . . . at least to do it consistently. Sometimes "Monk" manages to do that, but I think I've seen almost all the episodes. That one too mixes pathos with humor . . . Ooooh, that reminds me of another great show "One Mississippi" with Tig Notardo. Only two seasons, both excellent. Not sure why it was cancelled, but stuff I like is rarely popular . . . Tig's mother died from a fall, the same way mine did, suffering from a brain hemorrhage on what would seem to be just a routine evening watching TV, so I could totally relate. She also finds out some interesting things about her family, which I could also relate to. And growing up "different" in a small town, that theme was handled with great poise, IMHO.

I use ZD Soft Screen Recorder for streaming content.
It is not free. Currently it is $39.
I am not affiliated with the site; I just like the program.
Downside: it records in real time so you have to let the
show play thru while it records. So you might as well skip
recording it and watch it on the computer anyway.
