Recovery Disc Question

I've just had a new hard drive put in, to replace the old one that blew the proverbial fuse.
Do I need to make another set of recovery discs now, or will the ones I made from the original set-up still be ok?
Still on Vista Home Premium...

Original ones should be just fine if its the same configuration

Even better would be using one of the imaging programs and create a full image of your drive so should you need to recover you have the operating system and everything right on one backup.

As ravencajun said and I would suggest Acronis True Image. cg |

I purchased Acronis True Image AFTER I replaced my hard drive and had to use the recovery disks to reinstall the OS. It worked, but it was work since I had to get all the updates and reinstall all my programs. Now I back up to my external hard drive using Acronis once a month unless I am adding lots of new stuff, such as music and pictures. In that case, I back up more frequently. The point I'm making is that if the need ever arises again, I'll have everything, including the OS just as it is right now, ready to reinstall.

grandms my external hard drive has a cut off switch. I used to let it run all the time and than it started making a small amount of noise. So now I cut it off until it's needed. I've heard of some going bad. Mine is a Maxtor |

I Googled this page, and to poor, poor, pitiful me, the first one listed, Macrium Free, sounds the go. Has anyone heard of or experienced this one? Or is my being cheap going to come back and bite me on the posterior? Don't be scared to chastise me! Regards, Shax

I have used Macrium (free version) several times over the last couple of weeks and it is simple to use and works perfectly. There is one important point to note: the whole backup image that it creates must be on one media i.e. you cannot make large backups that span onto several DVDs. Backing up to an external hard drive or even a separate partition on you computer hard drive is the way to go anyway because it is so much quicker - about 20 minutes instead of 3-4 hours. I used the programme's recommended medium compression setting - high compression didn't seem to be create a much smaller file and took far longer. Colin

Shax, If your new hard drive is either a Maxtor or Seagate you can download and run a free version of Acronis True Image from the hard drive manufacturers web site. Grandms did you also create an emergency start up disk with your True Image program? If so did you test it? You should just so you can feel comfortable in the knowledge that if needed it will in fact start the computer.

cboy, I have mine scheduled to update once a month and keep it turned off and even unplugged the rest of the time. The evening before it is to update, I plug it in and turn on. But guess what happened today? My firewall would not let it run, and I was not at the computer to tell it to allow, so I had to make an extra "run". Very little new to back up this time, anyway.

I have recently found out about another new product that looks good. I have not used it but it has been recommended by some reputable folks. Free Drive Copy and Wiping Software it will do a full image copy and it also has the ability to wipe clean a drive to a safe state to get rid of it should you need that.

I never noticed Terabyte's free program. I've used several of their other products and found them to be very good.
