External HDD files "hidden" after virus-help!

So a couple days ago my computer got a pretty nasty virus, I was able to remove it from my computer in about an hour. However when I went to retrieve a file from my external hdd I was shocked to see that it displayed a locked icon over it. When I clicked on the folder the only thing inside of it was a file called "MRTstub". I looked it up online and it is supposedly a legitimate Microsoft file included with window updates that helps get rid of viruses. It should have automatically deleted itself and I was told it would be ok to delete the file so I did. Now my hdd is unlocked but I can't "see" any of my files even though I know they are there since it shows over 250gb of data being used. Please help and thank you! p.s my external hdd is drive J if that makes any difference.

What was the name of the virus? What did you use to remove it?

Instructions for Windows 7

Open Computer or Windows Explorer and press the Alt key.
Select Tools > Folder Options > and click the View tab
Under Advanced settings uncheck Hide empty drives in the Computer folder.
Click OK.
