Opening a new Yahoo account

Anyone else tried to open a new Yahoo account recently?

I was creating an account for a friend and Yahoo now requires a cell phone number so they can send you a confirmation prior to acceptance and I find that odd to say the very least. I do not possess one of those new fangled gadgets so how will I get on when trying to create a new account?

Any ideas? Thanks.

I suppose you could try using a landline phone number and see what happens. For some odd reason, I occasionally get text messages sent to my landline. Sometimes I'll get instructions on how to reply, sometimes not. If it turns out that there is no other option, I'd forget about Yahoo and use another service. My $.02.

I had remembered that this was optional at one time that you could say no to, but just tried it and you are absolutely correct - what a pain!

I have gmail accounts that are free, and don't require a cell phone number (yet).

Hi Sandi. I got my pump through Canadian Koi and Pond which deals with Sequence and WLim pumps in Canada. I paid $350 including shipping and GST (tax) for it. They sent my old pump back but I am going to talk to Terri again at Canadian Koi about sending the old pump to MDM Sequence in US to see if I can get some money back as the shaft is bent and MDM doesn't believe that is possible. So will see how that goes. Hula hoops and hostas--all I did was place a rock over part of the hula hoop along the pond edge and put the hostas inside the hoop. As the roots are long and the leaves spread on to the edge of the hoop they stayed in place. I don't have hostas this year as they are between $6 to $9 Cdn and in my climate have to pull them from the pond by end of August to put in the ground otherwise they won't overwinter. Parrot feather is onlyh $3.50 a bunch and spreads quickly. No pics yet camera needs recharging and currently don't know where it is in my renovation (inside as well) mess. I'll try to take some this week to show how the retro drain, sc etc. works. It's been pouring rain all week, the pond is only at 55F so the fish have been sulking in the bottom of the pond. I have water seeping up in the middle of my basement floor because the water table is so high this year. I had a sump pump put in but may have to get perimeter drain system installed which is very pricey about $5000 CD. Oh to win the 649 or something. Owning a home is a pain sometimes! I tried Mikie's advice and it didn't work. I also tried adding yahoo to my trusted sites and even turned off the Internet Protected Mode off. I not only like to download puzzles but read ebooks and I could open 3 new ebks but could not download them to save them. I've never had trouble before so I'm really stumped. Mlou

FYI.... A very short time ago, a friend of mine was a victim of this particular hack at Yahoo. I was listed in her contact list and all I can say is that this "nasty" is virulent. I don't use any Yahoo product and rarely, if ever visit their website. She is the only email friend I have that uses their email and even though we don't converse on a daily basis, just being one of her contacts made me a victim. I began to be barraged with unsavory mail...none of which I opened directly. But, no matter what protection I have on my system [and it's the best] I could not stop the onslaught. I suspect the reason being that I was not the addressee. The clever sender copied me rather than sending directly to my address. I tried every trick I knew to stop the mail...blocking IP #s, etc and nothing worked. My only recourse to stop the action was to delete my own email account entirely and begin a new. I'd had the account for sixteen years with nary a problem. Deleting it felt like loosing an old friend. Then I advised my friend to find another email program. Unfortunately, she didn't heed my advice and I expect she's been hit again. I insisted that she not put my new email address in her contact list so I may be safe this time around...but if not...the account I opened to continue conversing with her is what I consider a throw away account. I won't suffer if I have to close it quickly. Although...when I opened the new account to continue conversing with her...I made her promise not to list me as a contact anywhere on her system. I relate this experience for those of you...who like Jodi...are having difficulty resetting a password...and strongly suggest that you find new non-Yahoo email programs. I just heard from a techy. I asked that since the breach was in 2014 and the cows are out of the barn, why does anyone with a super duper password (versus PASSWORD) need to rush to change their passwords. 1. The theft was of the database of passwords which (if I understand correctly) is different than Joe, Mary, Tom, Dick, Harry and Sue's passwords. 2. Yahoo has to at least look/be/cya responsible. 3. Yahoo, as people have pointed out, has been sliding downhill for a long time, so, ahem, just maybe, they were not going to be spending funds for security experts, technology and white-hat hackers to keep membership info secure. 4. We all know this, but to state the obvious: one needn't enter personal information such as your pet's name, where you were born, your favorite flavor....Get creative and keep a little crib sheet about it. It's true, however, that if you ever run from president of a big important country, and your detractors find out that you fibbed or were not completely truthful about this important information, you could spend eternity assuring voters that you are overall decent, committed and will serve their interests. I think our family might want to overhaul the mongrel email programs we use. So, what's out there that might be reliable? G? Good point about using one's service provider email account then getting essentially locked out of it when you switch carriers. I asked the techy my question of just what percent of their users would 500 million be. Techy said the Yahoo isn't going to let anyone know. Of course.

I opened a Google account when I tried to download books and thought that was the only way for me to do it. I didn't like it but gave them my only phone number and as soon as I hung up I got 4 spam text messages. It had to be Google even though the messages had nothing to do with my Google account. I deleted the account immediately.

In case any of you don't know this...all you have to do to get taken off a text list is to reply with STOP and it does stop. They may reply again with Okay or something like that. I think it is the same thing as the do not call list.

I just verified that you do not need to provide a phone number to Google when creating a new account. They are tricky in that nothing is shown as required (like with a * or colored font) until you don't fill it in, bad design (or good if people continue to fill it in 'cause they think it's required). I was able to create an account without providing a phone number.

Now I do get the typical 'please provide us a cell phone number for recovery purposes' screen now and then on my gmail login with a teeny tiny 'no thanks'.

It was required and I tried once changing a number in the phone number and it would not accept it.

Wanted to edit this to say: I mentioned this to a clerk in Best Buy when looking at a tablet and he agreed, but he told me that to use the tablet I would not have to give them details like that for an account to use the tablet. That didn't sound right to me but if it is maybe there are different kinds of accounts, I don't really think so.

You don't need to give Google your phone #. I didn't and I have 5 different accounts.

Yahoo asked me just a couple days ago for cell phone number. The page didn't have button to dismiss it other than one that said 'ask me later. Think that's the 2nd time its presented me with the same page when logging into mail.yahoo.com in past month or so .

I have a yahoo account and multiple gmail accounts and all have my cell phone number listed as part of the security and have never received a text from any of them except when I have changed my password (which is what they say it is for),
