Will we need to remove the classic shell before we load the MS 8.1 up grade?

It sounds like the shell is incompatible with MS 8.1 so I will uninstall it before I upgrade. One poster said he would recommend 8.1 without the shell. He really liked it.

That is the registry fix worked on 8 but according to posters who have this same problem, says it doesn't work on 8.1. I am going to play around with enlarging every thing and possibly using one of my FF apps to work on the other. I can use it the way it is, it's just one of those things that nags at me and keeps me looking for a fix. I had a problem with personalize/color (taskbar) and kept messing with it until I stumbled on a fix. My taskbar was snow white and didn't match my wallpaper, all the borders were snow white. the option shown below was missing.

A new computer, we all should have one. Glad you have it fixed Grandms. Seams a bit drastic to me, but I can't say I've never done something like this either, because I have! I'm working on a Friends Computer right now. I've Reset this computer back to Factory Specs with Windows 8. I've been installing Windows Updates seems like forever! I still don't have Windows 8.1 installed yet, then there are more Updates! Not really sure of the Speed of this computer, think I saw 1.4GHz somewhere, but it seems really slow (it's an Toshiba Laptops with an AMD Processor). Could be Single Core, Dual-Core, Quad Core, who knows, guess I could look! Just looked, it's an AMD E1-1200 Dual-Core @ 1.4GHz. My Laptop I'm on right now is an Intel Core i5 Quad Core @ 1.6GHz with up to 2.6GHz Turbo Boost. My Laptop wipes the floor with this AMD!

"Everything is in English except settings." What is that a settings page for? I'm not a Windows person but I can't find anything that looks like that in Windows 10 settings. (The layout I mean, not the text) Also, with two cursors and a red heart around a switch, it almost looks like some sort help document that came with a downloaded program? Is that text really "text" or is it an image that includes text? (I ask because of the second cursor) If the Chinese text is part of an image, no regional setting will change it to English. Like I say though, I don't know Windows very well and may be looking in the wrong place. I'm just confused. I confuse easily. :)

That's what I thought too, not sure how big the upgrade is, but I would consider creating a restore point. I thought this was also automatically installed through a Microsoft up-date (Win 8.1). Do you know if that's true?

I read that....it would be. I am going on a bus tour during the release period. I will remove the shell before I leave just in case and make sure my update setting is NOT on automatic. My update settings get change quite often for some reason. I think they want to over ride my decisions.

Microsoft has announced that Windows 8.1 will be released as free update on the Windows Store to all Windows 8 and Windows RT users on October 18, 2013. Voluntary or a forced update?

Noteworthy caveat: You are required to have a personal Windows Live account or the enterprise equivalent in order to finish the installation. I do not like that idea.

Cloud storage: SkyDrive is the default location for saving documents as opposed to the C: drive, for example. I do not like that idea either. I like my stuff on my computer.

They would move our stuff to an online site????? I don't even know what sky drive is and doesn't sound good to me. I read the info on the site you mentioned and searched for info on other sites. I will just stick with Classic Shell. The people who post and/or work at classic shell are not happy campers. The F word was used frequently. All of this makes me wonder what the next OS will be like.

I did some more searching and one poster said it would be a windows update. I copied and pasted his statement and put the link in.

Launched the update (and yes it is an update - KB2849363 - it gets installed by Windows Update, configured as an update at restart, etc.). It installed and went through the whole configuring updates sequence at reboot, and voila! The Go to Store link comes up when I get to the desktop.

And that's all it does. If you click Go to Store, that's exactly what you do. You go to the Store. That's it. Search and find nothing.

What I've read and understand... windows automatic updates installs the store item for you to decide to install or not from the store the 8.1 upgrade.

I assume it will be much like 8.1 preview and if it errors on the live login it defaults to a local non email login. Many were using felonious email account names just for that purpose.

8.1 preview you can right click folders and/or files and tell it skydrive or not or both by save local copy. Which I use the local copy only on things I use frequently. I would hope the final 8.1 will do that save local copy automatically for a few days unless manually checked or marked not to..

They're still not finished with 8.1 final. So nobody knows the changes we will see on Oct 18 ,... probably as an upgrade to the RTm and download intergrated install withl at 8.1 upgrade or fresh iso upgrade last moment download install.

If a user is unhappy with it, they may not be able to remove it. Reformatting it will work for some but not for others. I will be able to remove it because I have the reformatting thumb drive from Acer. I don't have a live account so that lets me out also. I am happy with the shell, so will not do the upgrade. It won't be good if this turns out bad and users get angrier than they were.
