windows folder eating up hdd

I'm running Windows XP SP3. I have two computers, with identical mobo's (Intel D865PERL).

On one of them, I have a 40GB HD, and it's 75% full, with 22GB occupied by the "Windows" folder . The other PC has less than half of that amount used by the Windows folder, and I have Microsoft Studio installed on that one (Visual Basic, Access, etc).

To further complicate things, I tried usung System Restore today, and I noticed that I cannot restore to a point earlier than August 31. Normally one is allowed to choose restore points months ahead, no?

Am I the victim of a virus? I tried using "My Computer" to look at the subfolders in Windows, but couldn't find an obviously large one. I hope I don't have to do a reinstall.
