How do I move my email address book from my online comcast.net account to my new Thunderbird account ?

To import contacts in Thunderbird, go to Tools > Import. The Import dialog will open; choose Address Books and click Next.

Than you, zep. I did that, but the choices that come up on email providers do not include "smart zone" or comcast.net . I have just been using the online service from comcast for my email ; it's called "smart zone" , and this is all very frustrating. I have tried looking it up in the tutorials, but have had no luck with the suggestions. Is this a common problem?

"I can call myself anything I want on an email address, I can be SCowell@gmail.com and yet not be Simon Cowell. So I don't see how a service could actually know who owns which email address" While that it is true that no one service tries to "match up" email names with real people names.........They do collect email addresses associated with names from online resumes and sites like Linkdn and any other place a person may have so foolishly posted their real name, address, phone number and email to contact them. I would not waste money paying to get an email address. As said previously people change them all the time and while a posted email addy may have been associated with a particular person at one time in the past it does not mean it is a working email for that person months or years later. Just call them or write to them using the post office (assuming they have not moved from the info you got).

Yes, it's spam and it's called spoofing as mentioned. While it's not technically "dangerous" to open them, you could be asking for more spam by opening it. Often they'll put in a little code to tell if you've opened it and that verifies the email address. A verified email address is worth much more than an unverified one in the spamming world. Not unlike a known telephone number is worth more to a telemarketer. When you get this stuff, delete it, or pay the price. OJ, sometimes people will do the right thing and use BCC when they send mail to multiple people. They usually put their own address in the "To" field and "BCC" the others so addresses will be hidden. It's the right thing to do. Now that doesn't mean that it's *not* spam though! :) People who send to everyone in their address book and not BCC, and also the people who just forward hoaxes and other junk should have their computers confiscated.

Thanks very much for the advice. We did notify the friend right away (fortunately, without (forwarding anything), just in case, but in the process of getting the software for my husband, our young friend had taken over his i-Pad--no doubt as a kindness to "the elderly," done all the necessary things for him, and in the process given someone his birth date and email address. He doesn't know if she gave them to the coffee shop so as to use its WiFi, or to the company offering the free software. Knowing that public WiFi can be dangerous, I assume that his email address had been intercepted and used in a phishing attempt or perhaps to install malware. Many years ago, I got the Hiloti virus by clicking on a PDF notice purporting to be from UPS about being unable to deliver a package--just on the day I was expecting one. Wouldn't have clicked on the PDF if it weren't for that. The minute I clicked on the Adobe PDF file that claimed to contain the details of what to do to claim my package, poof, it disappeared and my PC subsequently went haywire. I really learned my lesson, and now we are careful to check with the sender if anything is the least suspicious. I didn't know it could be dangerous for us to forward such an email, but would have phoned the friend in advance to make sure she didn't click on anything. Full scans using both Norton and Trend Micro's House Call failed to detect anything dangerous, so with that and your kind answer, I guess I can sleep tonight! Thank you for the link to the tips, too. I will read and save them.

Hi,
Thank you for the link. However, the set up on "smart zone " is different ( windows 7) and the left hand navigation menu is not there.When I use the drop down menu on the address book, there is no option for exporting OR importing, for that matter. I do so wish there was. It certainly would make things easier. It's as though they don't want you to do anything to the program.

That's all the help I could provide. Not sure why E-Mail is so complicated, moving and address folder should be a simple process, more often it's not though.

salbwil go to the smartzone and click on 'Preferences'. After you click on that the left hand column (where the inbox, etc. was) will have 'Preferences' at the top. Near the bottom you will see 'Address Book'. Click on that and you should see the option to export your address book as a csv file.

I find Comcast "Smart Zone" very difficult. Very. I have never been able to import my address book from Outlook Express nor my contacts from Outlook. So, it isn't just you. I consider myself lucky that I can check all of my email addresses using it when away from home.

I just did a test. I have a fairly new comcast account but I don't use their smartzone email. I use Thunderbird and have my comcast, gmail and hotmail accounts in Thunderbird. I also have outlook on my computer but have never used it. The test was this. I exported my Thunderbird address book to a csv (comma seperated values) file. I then imported it into the smartzone using the method I posted above (preferences then click on 'address book' in the preferences column) that worked so I exported them from there and imported them into my gmail account. It worked with no problem at all and I have a fairly large address book.
