problem with Superantispyware

I tried to update this program and got the following message: Checking for definitions--failed, AND in a bright red lined message--Definition error--

What happened?

Also my computer is not only running very slow, and part of the problem is my Internet today, but takes forever to bring something up on the screen after I change programs.

I am looking for a good cleaner program and yes I have run both spy ware and malware programs.

Hi, A few exercises to do below:

Clean out your temporary internet files and temp files.

Download TFC by OldTimer From here click Here
to your desktop.

Double-click TFC.exe to run it.

Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator

TFC will close all programswhen run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin

* Click the Start button to begin the cleaning process.
* Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two.
* Please let TFC run uninterrupted until it is finished.

Once TFC is finished it should restart your computer. If it does not, please manually restart the computer yourself to ensure a complete cleaning.

NEXT
Go to the link below and do a defrag, only a defrag I don't suggest anything else on the page.

Finally Lets look at a log file that may provide a wealth of information.

Click Here to download HJTInstall.exe
Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop. Right click the Hijackthis Icon and Run as Adminstrator if you use Vista or Windows 7
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Copy" and Paste the entire contents of the log into your next post.
DO NOT use the AnalyzeThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what HJT lists will be harmless or even required by your Operating System.

Then do this

Double click the hijackthis Icon on the Desktop, Scroll down to Open the Misc Tools section" Click it at the bottom under System tools click "Open Uninstall Manager" over to the right click "Save List" Save it to your Desktop so you may find it, copy and paste it in your next reply..

What TFC Does for you, in case you're interested.

TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs). It shows the amount removed for each location found (in bytes) and the total removed (in MB).

Before running, it will stop Explorer and all other running applications. When finished, TFC should reboot the computer, if it does not ask, pleas do so yourself.
-- TFC only cleans temp folders.
-- TFC will not clean URL history, prefetch, or cookies. Depending on how often someone cleans their temp folders, their system hardware, and how many accounts are present, it can take anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or more. TFC will completely clear all temp files where other temp file cleaners may fail.

Hi, zep, I can get my definitions update...I am thinking that this pop up is notifying me about a software update? I'm sorry, I wasn't clear on that. exgm, I followed your link and I am set up as a home group. I am the only administrator as far as I know. When I first set up the computer, the setup process asked me to type in my name...I thought that was naming myself as the administrator? ...I was doing some looking around to see if I could provide any more information. I opened up Properties for SAS and there is a tab there titled COMPATIBILITY. I opened it and there is a checkbox there that says Run this program as an administrator. Will it solve my problem if I check it?

Hi everyone, I was unable to post because I couldn't log in. Apparently the cookie that it takes to get here was not there, so I emailed the forum and when I got back home walla I was able to log in and here I am. "Smiles" To answer the question is Auslogics an antivirus or a defrag program. It is a defrag program and is not an antivirus. I didn't know they had an antivirus. "LOL" I listened to the same thing you did about Norton and it definately has something in it which appears to be a firewall because it blocks things out and protects you like a firewall. I think the reason they made sure that the Windows firewall is on is because they aren't sure themselves. When I access a program Norton pops up and tells me it is safe to run. It happened earlier today but I can't remember what it was I was doing. I was in a hurry to do some things on this computer that I know they didn't do. I am a little nervous about CCleaner and I called them and one of the guys told me to take the check marks out of advanced so I did. I have never used CCleaner and it would be nice if I had more information on it. Can you all explain this program to me and what to look for, so that I won't delete something and my computer won't go boom? "LOL" Owbist you said this: I am amazed that someone as knowledgeable as yourself and willing to learn about computers would actually pay to have the computer cleaned or replace the CD player. If cleaning means removing dust a $3 can of compressed air fixes that pronto. If cleaning means removing programs (including those you wanted kept) then the simple Add/Remove feature does that for you. Replacing a CD player is a simple task also, even for those who have not tried before. You simply remove the old and reverse the sequence to install the new. The only reason that I took the computer in was because I have my grandchildren around 3 days a week and sometimes a little more because they love us. Ha! It is difficult for me to have the time to play by trying to install something and little ones that are 3 and 8 years of age want to play on the computer not watch me fix it. "LOL" Now when I got this computer back, it was running slow again and instead of calling them I did a scan disk and used Auslogics Defrag and walla it is running like a charm. I think they got lazy and didn't do it. I really like the Auslogics Defrag it is so fast and puts things back where they belong. They did check the hard drive to see if it was Ok and it is. This computer is going on 6 years old and I guess I haven't done to bad after all my very first computer I crashed several times but, that was ages ago. Remember the first packard bell computers? I had the 3.1 and then they sent me the CD for Windows 95. Well I learned fast that you can't put old on top of new because then it would crash. I still have that old computer and I need to get rid of it, I never get on it at all, it is just sitting there collecting dust. Ha! owbist is absolutely correct. Sometimes a program can get corrupted or a file in it gets corrupted and in those cases it is usually best to just do an uninstall/delete from add remove of the program and then just go download and install it fresh then try to do the updates. I have been using superantispyware for quite some time now and never seen that happen. Do you have your firewall set to allow superantispyware to access the internet? I would go into the settings and make sure you have that set to allow. Mine is set to allow so it never has to ask permission for that program.

Turning off tracking cookie checking is a configuration option in SuperAntiSpyware. But imagine that will save only a few seconds on total time to scan completion. Running a cookie cleaner like CCleaner before virus scans will keep the found warnings window less scary looking from all the tracking cookie finds.:) By default SuperAntiSpyware default configuration is 'only scans known file types' & few times I've noticed when that option is unchecked the computers anti-virus program will additionally pop some extra warnings on the second scan when SAS touches some of the bad guy type files - but it adds alot of time to the scan completion. I just cleaned one reoccurring virus .. it was acrobat.com would ask to update.. and that was the offending party. So every update... scan again hah.

SuperAntiSpyware has a new version today
Sounds like it messed up when it tried to update.

Or the computer has a program that purposely disabled it knowing their software would be discovered and removed.

Yes I got the new version today too, no issues. Not really looking at the SuperAntispyware issue here, looking at the compliant of the slow computer, so I'm going to look at the entire computer, clean it up, update where necessary etc, if the user is willing. The SuperAntispyware issue will probably just vanish as we move along, also user has mentioned internet issue so that's probably the problem with the update for SuperAntispyware.

I just upgraded to the new version and all went went well.

Had a problem with MS Essentials a couple of days ago, said there was no internet connection. Managed to fix the problem. First problem I have had with it.

I got an update notice from SAS today and tried to update but no updates showed up. I waited a while in case it was working but then closed it down.

Zeb--did you get my message? TFC cannot be run from a temp. folder Please down load it to your desktop or other suitable location.

That's ok....I'm not sure what that error is or how to fix it, TFC should run from the desktop and automatically runs from that location only. weird! I would Delete the icon (TFC) reboot and re-download it. See what that does.

By default TFC should download directly to the desktop. Do you get the option where to direct the download to? If so make sure to choose desktop.
