Whoa, this is spooky--the printer I was asking about in the first place died last week and just yesterday I replaced it....then this pops up! Actually the $100 price turned out to be unrealistic as was noted. I ended up buying this Epson all-in-one on sale at Office Depot; I think I paid $129. It's worked very well until last week when, after only a couple of years, the print function suddenly failed. VERY frustrating, I keep getting paper jams when trying to print but it will still make copies(!). After a week of trying all kinds of google-driven solutions I gave up yesterday and bought another Epson all in one. Very similar model, they both have flat bed print/scan capability, double paper feeds (nice for keeping envelopes in one, paper in the other) and generally work quite well. So I conditionally recommend these printers-I suspect the problem was caused by a power failure that knocked everything offline pretty abruptly last week. If not for that issue, the machine works very well and has everything I need for home office use.

Whatever you do, don't buy a very inexpensive one. My son didn't need a printer in college but did in grad school. He was trying to be frugal and picked a cheap one -- less than $50. It didn't work well, sounded terrible and went back. Same son just got a laser printer because the inkjet went through a period of non-use and had dried ink that couldn't be cleaned. I think you need to spend $100 to get something dependable either way and for occasional printing, laser printers are now more affordable and make sense. They do tend to be larger -- but not as large as they used to be. We still use an HP inkjet, but might be looking at a laser when it decides to leave us.

In the past two years I've purchased two All in One laser models, one Canon and one Brother. They've both been excellent and indistinguishable in quality and performance as far as I'm concerned. The same features - scanning, copying, and printing. There are some that will also send and receive faxes if that's of interest for you. Both purchased (at different times) from Office Max/Office Depot. One was about $125, the other $150. Good printing speed, very light use of toner (and pretty inexpensive to replace the cassettes), high quality images, easy to use after setup.

I don't use or need large format either but wouldn't hesitate to go to laser. When I was using inkjet, I printed so seldomly that the ink would dry or the heads would clog and I'd have to clean heads and/or replace ink far too often. The printers were cheap but the ink was expensive. The last time I bought a basic monochrome Brother laser and it seems to always be ready to print anytime I am. I just looked it up and I see that I bought the last (generic, less that $30) toner cartridge back in March of 2016. Today, after not printing for a few months, I needed to print a couple things and it printed fine. I wouldn't have given my older inkjets a chance in... ? :)
