iMac 27 Issues

I usually post on Kitchen and Home Design Forums, so I'm not exactly a newbie, but this is first time on this forum. I have an iMac 27, which is a replacement for the one that I received as a Christmas present and that had chronic problems necessitating trips to the Mac Store eighty miles away, calls to tech support, tearing hair out, and so forth. Now I have noticed a couple of problems that I hope can be remedied here.

1) Sometimes when I go to sites, usually to request price quotes on pieces of furniture or lighting, the computer hangs, the little multi-colored gear (does it have a name?) shows up interminably, and then I cannot get out of the site. If I go to "File" in order to exit the window, I cannot get the file items to highlight or work. If I turn off the computer and turn it back on, it goes to the same hung status. Is there a way to get out of sites that do this?

2) I need a good word processing program. I am very familiar with Word. Should I get the Microsoft Office Suite for Macs? Or should I get the Apple word processing program? I need to write academic papers using MLA and Chicago formats, and I do not do formal business presentations, if that helps for information purposes. I do not have trouble with Word on the older Macs at school, but I have read of incompatibility issues with newer Macs.

Any thoughts and help would be appreciated.

The spinning wait cursor? It's much like the hourglass in Windows, it means the system is doing something. What browser are you using? You can force quit the application by right clicking on it's icon in the dock or clicking on the Apple symbol in the upper left corner of your screen.

If you need compatibility with other Office users, I'd get MS Office. Otherwise, OpenOffice works just fine and is free.

Right--I know it means the computer is doing something. It's just that it doesn't stop spinning!

Right-clicking on the icon in the dock wasn't an option as I could not get to the dock. Couldn't get to the cute little Apple icon either. Then, I turned off the computer, turned it back on, and got same hung screen and spinning wait cursor. So, I unplugged the computer, left it off for several hours, plugged it back in, got the same screen, but was able to get to the dock and close out the offending site.
I have read that Office 2010 has incompatibilities with Apple that are worse than 2003 version. True?

I'm not a pro, but here's my two cents..........I switched six years ago after twenty years with PC. For me, the change has been wonderful. My down-time dropped to zero instantly and has stayed there. No hardware or software troubles and no bugs from the beginning until now....and I'm up and running 24/7/365. Of course I've had to learn new programs and aps but at least the machine doesn't fight me all the time like my PC's always did. Thing just sits here and runs. In response to the "Macs are expensive" argument so often encountered, I would like to say this: I used to bring in computer-techs twice year, on average, to straighten out my PC stuff. Not having to do that anymore has essentially paid for the machine at this point...and those service-dollars spent don't include the annoyance and aggravation and lost work-time that accompanied the issues. Your hot-button appears to be your particular kind of work...which I am not familiar with. Since it's important to you, I would advise finding an Apple Store and taking some of your stuff on disk or flash-drive with you. All their machines will be there up and running all the time. Let them show you how the iMac would work with your stuff and you can decide based on your actual experience. I do have several professional friends who are compelled to work with programs that only run on Windows. Those folks run Windows on their Macs via parallels and run their proprietary programs that way. However, except for those programs, they leave Windows off and run everything else with the Mac's OS. As far as "learning curve", you'll be amazed at what you can do within hours. In my case, having no previous experience, I was surfing within 45 minutes of the box arriving at the door. I was comfortable within days; confident in a week; proficient in a couple of weeks. And I was absolutely paranoid in the beginning because of all my PC hassles over the years. My advice would be don't worry about the learning curve. I have little doubt things will flow very naturally for you. At this point, I have many family members and friends who have made the switch and they've all said the same thing about that.

I HAVE A PHILIPS TV MODEL NUMBER 27PT6441/37 WITH A CHASSIS NUMBER LO4.1U AA when powered on the screen is black for a few seconds with thin blue, red, and green lines completely across the upper section of the screen(horizontal) and when the picture comes on there is a slight distortion in shape where the picture doesnt fill the screen...again at the top part of the screen, and the left side is not as high as the right side of the picture (slight angle) any help will greatly be appreciated. thank you

Thanks for all the replies - I can understand why people are suspecting my contractor of ignorance. That can happen, but I don't believe it to be the case this time. I think he is making sure I am happy with the outcome and have a oven that won't tip or tear out cabinet face frame. Maybe he is being over cautious.... It sounds like it is possible to just set the 27 inch oven on top of a base support instead of IN a 27 inch cabinet - is this correct? Then use some filler pieces if there is any space left exposed, right? Ok, so how would you secure the oven if you are NOT screwing clips to the face frame. If we were to anchor it to the back of the wall, it would certainly be secure, BUT, if the oven ever needed servicing or removal, would we have to remove our granite counter to get at it? Also, what should we do about supporting the granite counter above? Should we use the MDF vertical cabinet sides on either side of the oven?? I'm not at all concerned about the cost of the cabinet. It was only $130, then Home Depot gave me another $50 off when I asked about the problem with their cabinet specs. My only concerns are making sure the oven is secure with support for the granite. This oven will be adjacent to a wall, so it is at the end of a line of countertop.

I would write off Viking. Their current owners are embattled with the previous owners over the sale of the company and its condition at the point of sales. Reports of service recently have not been promising either. I have an older 27" oven from Miele. It is over 10yrs old and my cabinet can accommodate a 30" model. I am not sure I would buy a 27" as a replacement. If I were in your shoes, I would replace it with a 30". Good luck!

Option-Command-Esc (pressed together) will get you to the force quit menu.

Control-Command-Eject (pressed together) will close all applications and restart the computer

Not quite sure what the problem may be but you might want to try a different browser, Safari isn't the best. I primarily use Firefox but also have Chrome. Both work fine.

I haven't used Microsoft Office on a Mac in quite a while so I can't comment on it. I know they added Outlook and maybe something else to the current suite. I do use Open Office and have generally been pleased. The only drawback is that it is not 100% compatible with Microsoft Office.

As an aside a while back I worked on a PowerPoint project with a guy who had MS Office on his Mac. At the time I had a Windows machine. What's interesting is that the Mac version of Office had features that Windows version didn't have. I recall there was a slide transition that we added on his Mac. The transition functioned perfectly on the Windows machine and I could even edit it but couldn't add it to another PowerPoint project.

Thank you, mike. I didn't see this until today and will do, as I am having the same problem. Thank you for the MS Office info, also.
