is QV06 really a virus?

No. It's a browser hijacker.

In the log reports that I sometimes ask for it looks like this,

How did you remove qvo6?

Or from longtime safe, and reputable sites such as Filehippo.com or majorgeeks.com.

When you have time please take a look at the link below. I came across it a few days ago, and have been sharing at forums when it might be pertinent.

As far as the site goes itself, a basic Google search using the keywords " ez-download.com" (sans quotes) would have reported to you folks a lot of negative commentary. On the report, WOT isn't fond of it either.

Yeah it was a bit silly to go there, he did realize that afterwards but he was tired and wanted to do something quickly. Learning curve :-)

So once we had QV06 he went to Techspot.com for advise and ended up downloading Adwcleaner from Bleepingcomputer.com
That got rid of it.

To be honest I'm not a big fan of downloading programs to clean up/uninstall other programs but nothing else seemed to work. So I wanted to check what it was all about for myself and I went to Bleepingcomputer.com (on another pc) to have a look at the info about it. It started downloading the Adwcleaner straight away even though I had only gone to the website to visit. I hadn't clicked a 'download here' button or anything like that, that seems strange to me.

After my partner removed the QV06 from the other computer he also ran the eset online scanner to check if that came up clean, which it did. It really looks like it's gone.

Problem is that this malware and & most malware ends up in the windows registry, it adds registry keys, changes registry value data etc, and it creates other files an folders too in various locations. An experienced helper will know what automated tool to use for the type of infection and will have the user create a restore point or back up the registry first before using any tool.

I would have used adwcleaner too, but I may have run junkware removal (JRT) tool first because it backs up the registry first thing, you may have seen that tool on bleeping computer too, although it probably would not have addressed the qv06 issue.

You're right to be hesitant about downloading tools to remove other things. Throwing automated tools at an issue and hoping they stick or make the problem go away can be risky without some sort of knowledge what these tools do.

I was curious how you removed it, that's why I asked.
