Avast

I have been notified that I will lose Avast in 27 days unless I update it. I see no way to update it & still get it free.

How is it done?

You have to re-register Avast every year. Go to this page, fill in the information and get a number which you can then enter in your Avast to renew it for a year.

on the new AVAST version when that info box pops up to tell you it is time it normally has a link right there on it to simply click to do the re-register. They have made it extremely simple to do.

You do NOT want to go with the option to upgrade to the pay version be sure you are careful and do not select that option.

Not on windows 8.1. Defender on windows 8.1 is basically Microsoft Security Essentials, if you were to install avast Defender I think is automatically disabled.

I agree, it's definitely not necessary to uninstall the old antivirus software before downloading a new one. But before installing the new one, for sure. fredda, at the risk of stating the obvious, Windows XP is no longer supported from a security standpoint and using it does entail some risk. So long as you are using this PC for general purposes only and not for essential uses with any Win-only software, I would seriously consider installing Linux (a different operating system that's available for no cost) to replace XP. Start a new thread on that topic if that may apply to you, there are other contributors here (not me) who can provide helpful guidance.
