I would think it would not take long for the plants to die if the water was not running. Also a concern because to some extent my plants are out of sight i.e. on top of my flat roof. This is the reason why I am interested with the aeroponics. My property is covered by enormous trees and the roof is the only place that gets full sun. So I didn't want to drag tons of dirt up on the roof. Also could dismantle the system in the winter. I also have to admit that I am thrifty and these systems do seem to use resources efficiently. Although putting plants in the dirt would be cheaper and you could always just buy tomatoes and peppers at the store but this is more fun among other benefits. Thanks Hex I like the idea of short duration sprays as well and is the direction I plan to go with but I wonder why,from the high pressure system I have seen so far, that most go with longer spray times Ex (10 secs. every 10 min.) Same amount of water more or less. Maybe it is easier to pull off, less wear and tear on parts, or maybe it is the controllers they use.???? Side note the link you sent me to has a very similar (looks identical) controller that I use on my fish tank. It is made Digital Aquatics and I am very happy with so far. Also notice they mention insulating root area. Does anyone know what is the approx. ideal temp. for the root area? (for aeroponics) Thanks for any help. If you want to grow for dry type beans, The "cooking" beans should do fine. Not as much care is given to maintaining true seed but that is the major difference. Of course if you are growing snap beans, you will not find them in the dry bean section.

I've had many 'fairy rings' and am very familiar with how to get them to once again grow in the center. I piled leaves into the center every time and was always rewarded in the Spring with eyes growing back into the middle. I thought it was dumb luck, but after reading these posts, and becoming totally confused about these opinions, I decided to run it all past one of the Morton Arboretum horticulturists here in Lisle, Illinois where they have an enormous hosta garden. I am a student in two of their certificate programs - Natural History and Botanical Illustration, so I am acquainted with many of the staff. This is what I got back today: "Finely shredded leaves filter down through the soil and easily decompose by spring, providing minerals and nutrients plants require. We have ground all different kinds and amounts (of leaves) into both turf and plants and the benefit of incorporating this back into the soil is the microbes and the type of nutrition provided. Maple leaves, high in calcium and potassium, break down easily as do Oak leaves. Oak leaves are especially beneficial to acid-loving plants, even though the composting process neutralizes the acidic nature. It is, however, crucial that the leaves be finely shredded. As regards your problem of the 'fairy ring' what is occurring over winter is the development of new eyes growing into the middle again, as well as growing out, as these nutrients have provided superior nutrition to the 'inside' of the 'fairy ring'. Therefore, the inside is not 'dead' - rather it is simply sending out eyes into the middle to reach the newly-provided nutrients." She went on to tell me that this middle 'space' cannot be referred to as 'dead' -- it is simply devoid of eyes because the plant has 'grown outward' trying to reach nutrients. She added that the height of the leaves piled in the center matters little, but the more the better - as long as they are removed in Spring. I hope that settles it! Westy

I really think you are heading in the wrong direction (think appropriate plant for the appropriate site) if you need first aid to keep something growing well, that's not what gardening is about for me at least, but Physan 20: Roses - Brown Canker Use regular spraying. Application should begin in early Spring as soon as new growth starts and should be made often enough to provide protection throughout the rainy periods and to keep the new growth covered. On the average, an application once a week will be needed from early Spring until plants are dormant. My note: I'd replace the roses with something less demanding before I'd commit to a continuous weekly spray to keep them healthy. If yours began budding (growth buds) in February like here, you are already about 4 months late, or approximately 16 treatments, in beginning a spray program.
