question about adding a different browser

Hi! I use IE9 currently. I have purchased some on-line sewing classes and my current internet connection (Wild Blue) is not fast enough to watch the videos easily, although it seems like later at night I can watch them. It was suggested to download Google Chrome. Can I do that and what happens to IE? Will it add a lot to my hard drive? This is an area that I know nothing about. Thanks!

Install it from Google site, but watch the install and watch for the check box 'Make google my default browser' or any other extra that might appear that you probably dont want.

Its maybe 20mb so unless your hard drive is already low on space, its not really big. But its about the same speed as IE9 for most people.

IF Your internet speed is slow during normal hours .. Chrome isnt gonna fix that.

That does seem better, Zep516. Thanks. I had turned off the phishing filter,without noticing much difference, but disabling it improved the speed. I go to familiar websites for the most part and keep my anti-virus and anti-spyware software updated. Mikie, I could not switch to Apple, it's just not my cup of tea ;-) Pam

Kath, glad you got your email back. About Firefox 10.0.2. Is that what you had, or did you update it along with Thunderbird? Wondering what caused your problem. I don't know whether to get the update or not. I'm sure Alex will do well on the test. OJ, I had that same problem with Gmail. I use Yahoo now. The wall there is partly garage which is unheated and (probably) uninsulated and partly (where the windows are) a chunk of garage that was carved out during construction to serve as a potting room with an open doorway. It's a little weird. Anyway, it's not quite the same as your friend is proposing. It has ceiling vents (which are stuck in the open position) for ventilation and looks like it was a pretty nice kit when installed, although it's just single-paned glass. I'm not sure I would have chosen to install it like that, though. It's slightly higher than the roof and presented a challenge for the roofer. Once we try growing things in there and using water in it we'll have a better idea of the humidity. I'm hoping it'll be more like a sunroom or enclosed porch than a swampy hothouse. I'm looking forward to cleaning it up after the earthquake. No wimpy acrylic ceiling glass here! :P (Don't let your friend put glass over his head--you guys are due too!)

A power strip or cube for less than 15 amps would not be sold by responsible stores. Position of a receptacles three prongs defines it as a 15 amp circuit. Naysayers did not read what was posted. I never said numbers were on a cord. Numbers are located "adjacent" to where the cord attaches. He reads what he wants to hear. House wiring also was never an issue. What house wiring provides is defined by the mechanical shape of receptacle prongs. That 15 amp wall receptacle is powered probably by a 20 amp circuit breaker. Nothing says fear or misinformation except what some misread. When powering multiple devices, a power strip must have one critically important feature - a 15 amp circuit breaker. If a power strip is minimally sufficient, it can provide all 15 amps from a wall receptacle - never less. Lesser power strips cannot be UL listed, are potentially unsafe, and expose some without basic safety knowledge. If a store sells a power strip without UL listing (less than 15 amps), then worry about integrity of that store. Also be wary of anyone who believes a less than 15 amp power strip can exist and who thinks a 15 amp circuit breaker is optional. Your numbers (1100-1200 watts) define any (UL listed) power strip as sufficient.

I E stays exactly the same, you are not affecting it. To use IE just click on the IE icon on the desktop, to use Chrome or firefox or any other browsers just click on the icon for it on the desktop. You can have more than one open at a time if you want.
It is just another program. I don't think it will affect the hard drive they are not to large.
Whether it will be faster depends on why it's slow. If it is your Internet Speed connection then it won't matter.
What you can do that might help is start the video then pause it while it finishes loading, you can see the progress bar, then start viewing it, that allows the buffer to catch up.

I did that a lot when I was on dial-up and it worked well. When things were really large/long I'd start it then minimize it (hit the minus key up top) and you can still use the computer while it loads. It will be waiting at the bottom of your screen when you are ready.
