I have Microsoft xp professional as an operating system. What should I move up to now?

You could download the Windows 7 upgrade advisor to find out if your machine is capable of running Windows 7, or you could wait until Windows 8 is released in a few months.

Just got a new Dell laptop with Windows 7, and at Costco, you can registered for Windows 8 for under $15 when available. I followed instructions to make Win 7 look like my old XP somewhat, and I like it.

Nice to see that prices came down quite a bit. This was $599, and had been $999 only a few weeks ago.

My young son accidentally changed the administrative password of my systemÂs Operating system, is there any way to re-install my operating system without the aid of a replacement disc? And one more question guys Â is there any email provider who can protect my kidÂs mail account from unwanted SPAM and Lottery messages ? He is using AOL account created by me and IÂm just worrying about content which I receive through this email account. Well bossjim, the "yes dear" is kinda like agreeing to use MS software precisely as MS suggests you use it.........so being basically an anti-MS person, I have managed to develop alternative methods to using their mind-numbing software, by using a MAC! So....Wife 1.0, now has alternative methods of operation, which, while limited, provide for some degree of flexibility, and use of grey matter. These days though, the functionality of grey matter, has declined, therefore I have misgivings about winning the battle, in the long run. (smile)

Hi jean_mi_z5, Reports inconclusive to me. It's showing a lot of system file crashes, but those crashes can be caused by 3ed party files / drives causing the Microsoft drivers to crash and I don't see any 3ed party listed. If you're having a lot of blue screens and it appears you are, I strongly recommend you post at the link provided. Well, the BSOD said what was wrong. Nobody could translate that information when you did not post those numbers. Further useful facts in the system (event) logs has now been destroyed by a nuke'n'pave. You have fixed many perfectly good things using hardware that was questionable. So now the problem is exponentially complicated. Learn from the experience. You fixed things without first learning what was defective. Destroyed or withheld information that could have identified that defect. And may now have multiple failures. The problems has been made exponentially more complex. I could walk you through the recovery process. But it will be long due to so many unnecessary changes and now so many other questionable items. Recovery means changes only after a defect is identified. The BSOD said what is defective. Post that information if still available. Get whatever is found in the new system logs. And buy or borrow a multimeter. Also learn this. Better computer manufacturers provide comprehensive hardware diagnostics for free on the hard drive, on a CD-rom, and on their web site. All manufacturers have them. But only the better manufacturers provide them. Your problem is why diagnostics exist and are so useful. To see the defect immediately. Because they cut costs (did not provide diagnostics), then notice how confused you have become. Another useful fact for when you next buy a new computer.

How much memory does your Microsoft xp professional computer have now ??

I've seen some 1gb ram, win7 32bit computers, but they usually need more like 2gb minimum ram.

Deb are you thinking of a new computer or upgrading the XP machine?

If you are thinking of upgrading I personally would say forget it unless you have a really good computer right now that needs something more than you get with XP.

If you are thinking new then go for Windows 7 or 8 but 64 bit architecture and perhaps 8 gigs of RAM (memory).

Some sort of Inspiron, not sure of the details, my DH did all that. But I was worried about upgrading my old tried-and-true, and I don't like change that much.

For $599 and $699, there were two HP machines and two Dells, all 17.3", at our local store. The link shows out of stock at the online store, but my store had several in stock

I have a Dell laptop and for some unknown reason the "toolbar" at the bottom of the desktop has moved to the right side of the screen. Terribly annoying. Can anyone tell me what steps to take to get this back to the bottom where it belongs? I have Windows 7 and operating with Internet Explorer.

Blueit...each new problem should have it own thread...Try clicking on the toolbar and dragging it to where you want it..Once you get it back to the bottom, right click on the toolbar and select LOCK the toolbar
