Sorry, I don't know but I would guess the 270% would be pretty good proof. If I may ask what kind of service do you have that limits downloads. I've never heard of that before. I have the cheapest internet my cable company has and there is no limit.

I am allowed 40 gigabytes per month right now. Two weeks ago I challenged a bill and the lady asked why I was paying for 80 gigs but only using 17 on average. Then she suggested I drop to 40 gigs and save about $23. On a government pension $23 means quite a bit so I went down. Two days later I found my 2 youngest grandchildren (12 and 13) were coming for 16 days.

Yesterday alone 12 gigs were downloaded.

iPod (and iPads for that matter) don't have a native way to view files, like Windows or OS X do. You'd need to download an app. Which means you'd need access to the device.

Or access to their iTunes account and look at billing details.

Have you been monitoring what they are doing online? Listening to music, watching YouTube videos, streaming movies (as opposed to downloading then), playing games, etc. all consume bandwidth. It's possible no one "lied" to you. Kids use the Internet for all kinds of things without thinking about it, and undoubtedly have no idea of how the things they do online eat into your limited Internet allowance.

Everyone is different, but in my opinion 12 +13 year old kids are old enough to know they are expected to tell the truth. In fact, long past old enough.

How do you know when all the download stuff was done? Simple - after checking with their parents, you confront them, tell them of the problem that has happeneed, and tell them they are responsible to pay the damages UNLESS THEY CAN PROVE the downloads happened elsewhere. If you did nothing unusual on your own, then I'd have no problem treating them as guilty until proven innocent. Then you need to work in a lecture about truth and integrity.

well, unless you have an unsecured router and a neighbor who is piggybacking on it wirelessly, someone in the household is online. It will be interesting to hear what you find out. Good luck...

Well I think I might have to actually pull the plug on the router, really take the plug out and put it away that way there's no question that it's being used when you are not aware of it.

owbist, you know the situation and I'm only speculating. If you're saying that talking about this kid to his mother isn't a fireside chat, make it one. I think people, kids especially, rise or sink to whatever level the bar is set at. Maybe this kid needs the bar raised? Maybe the mother does too?

Owbist have you tried logging into your router use your admin password get into the router and viewing the router logs? Most contain that info on what sites visited etc. Try googling for that info, also you can add free programs that will have it create more detailed logs for you and there are some freebie router monitors that keep track of that kind of stuff.

Ravencajun, wow you got me all excited there for a minute or three ha ha. Never knew about router logs till now and a Worldstart tutorial lead me along. That was when I realised I had disassociated the WiFi early today, saved and by doing so wiped the old logs. Only today's activity is visible. But I will keep that neat tid bit for future reference for sure. Thank you.

The Dlink router does not seem to offer the amount of information suggested by the Worldstart tutorial though. Cheaper router, less bells and whistles I suppose.

7-12 gigs of data is pretty much guaranteed to be a movie. There's nothing else that big that would be downloaded to a portable device.

How unfortunate. Perhaps just say nothing, suck it up and be prepared next time? That way there will be a next time. Not easy.

Relationships are the most difficult problem I have ever faced. You have to decide how much the relationship is worth to you. Personally I believe it should be mentioned for the good of the kids. When they get away with something like this they will do it again unless someone lets them know that it is not the thing to do. You might just get the kids aside and tell them you know what they did and tell them not to do it again If they are embarrassed or a little scared they may not do it again especially at your house. Tell them how much their stunt cost you in money.
