I haven't been on here in a long time, but having a problem with Word. Word Documents will not open by double clicking. The page will open, but no documents. This just happened recently..probably after an update! I am running XP. IE7..Not having a problem with anything else, just can't get to any of my stuff. Oh, I can copy the documents folder to a flashdrive and open them from my laptop, which is Vista, but my eyesight is not good and I can't see over there! Any help appreciated!

Hi idaf,

Try this, I'm thinking a file association issue.

1 Click Start, and then click Search.
2 Right-click the file that you want to check the default program for, and then do one of the following:
3 Click Open With.
4 Click Open With, and then click Choose Default Program.

Not sure about doing it in Word. Why don't you use Excel instead? It is really easy to sort any way you want in Excel.

My gut reaction is that over time computers become slower as, for lack of a better description, get "clogged." It might not be a bad idea to back up critical data and then do a fresh install of the operating system and applications. You should also make sure that Office is being updated. I want to say that with Office 2000, it needs to be updated manually. You'll also need the original disc to do the updates. Of course, you should have current anti-virus software running and run malware software on a regular basis.

In word 2007 when you get your page of labels ready to type in the information click on the 'home tab' and in the section where you pick your font look on the bottom line of the ribbon and to the right of the word 'font' you will see a small square with an arrow pointing down to the right. Click on that square to open the font dialog box. After you set the font and all the attributes you want click on the 'default' button which is on the bottom left of the font dialog box. Hope this does it for you.

Not working, Joe. The box that says Always use this program to open this type of file had been unticked, but it makees no difference after I ticked it. Ida

Lets try a System Restore, simple process an safe to do,

Open System Restore by clicking the Start button In the search box, type System Restore, and then, in the list of results, click System Restore. Administrator permission required If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Follow the steps in the wizard to choose a restore point and restore your computer.

Have you gone into Windows Updates to see if there are any Microsoft Word updates that need to be installed? They would be under "Optional Updates". Also, if there are any critical updates, you might as well install those while you are there.

Zep, I will need more time than I have tonight to try a system restore..maybe tomorrow. I get automatic updates so I am current there...Strange thing is, I can go from the Start menu up to Open Office Document, and a document will open right up, but will not by clicking on one in My Documents folder. Thanks for all the suggestions! I will check back here tomorrow...

Optional updates are not automatically installed. That is why they are called "optional". Only the important updates can be installed automatically. Did you go into Windows Updates to check for any available optional updates?

Yes. Microsoft website says I do not need any optional updates...Thanks for all the suggestions!
