Make sure the file you have created is not still open. Close your burner software and any other software accessing the file, and remove the dvd from the drive. Then try to rename it again. If you still can not rename it, right click the file in windows explorer, select properties, and ensure that it attributes are not set to protected, hidden, or read only. If they are, uncheck the boxes, click apply, then click ok. Try to rename it again. if this still does not work, try rebooting your conputer. If this still does not work, please type the exact error code you receive here.

Gene Ah, that age old question to which there is not a definite answer. You said this computer is 6 year old so anything you buy today for it might not be useable in the next machine. Memory is dirt cheap these days, however you have 1.2 gigs and if you have XP then 2gigs is the limit assuming your motherboard can accept that. It should be, but wisdom suggests to check first. How many sticks and what size are the ones installed? Probably a 1gig and a 256 meg A better graphics/video card would work wonders but again, If you current motherboard has only PCI (not PCIe) or AGP the new card will be no use in a newer machine later on.

The resolution was short -lived. Problem happened again and the noise after the paper clip insertion persisted until the computer is shut down. During the shutdown process, the DVD drive ran ever faster-- until I feared for my safety. I unplugged the computer. The drive opened after reboot. The information about the drive is in my original post. Looks as if the (ATA) drive is an obsolete bird and only used ones are available. Not to my liking. As best I can tell, my computer was built 4/14/2010-- not so long ago from my perspective. Obsolete already? So I need a new DVD drive. Please suggest a good one, compatible with my computer. I would check the ribbon cable myself. First I would ensure the current cable is seated nicely and the coloured strip is on the pin 1 side. If that does not resolve it try a different ribbon cable. Did you use the new one that came with the second DVD player? The newer ones are 80 wire rather than the older 40 wire cable. Where do you have the jumper set to on the DVD - Master, Slave or Cable select?
