Ext HD

Since reformatting my laptop certain music and photo editing programmes are not fully functional when trying to edit contents of Ext HD....I get error reports.
The programmes do function with files added to the HD
post reformat.
What did I muck up?...thank you

All programmes are up to date.

The problem as you're describing it isn't completely clear to me. Is it something wrong with the programs, or something wrong with the data (photo and music) files? Have you tried to open the music and photo files with other programs?

When a program isn't running properly, the first thing to do is to uninstall it, delete all the accompanying files in the program and app data folders, and then re-install it. Have you tried that?

There is nothing wrong with the programmes...MP3Gain for example works well with all tunes on HD that were added after reformat and tunes on laptop....it's the tunes on the HD that were there before reformat that are not accepted by the editing programmes..nothing wrong with any data. I can play tunes and view pictures...
MP3Gain gives me an error in processing message and photo editing will not save.
If I Drag and Drop a tune from the Ext HD onto desktop MP3Gain works but not directly from the HD.
Hope that clarifies.
Just to be sure I have re installed all programmes.

I'd have done what Dianne did for filter media if I had the option. Not many stores around here period. The stuff I got from skippy is like extra stiff nylon scrubbers. Been running just a few days and the patriotic scrubbers are all quite green now. I forgot about the cost of the egg crate - $12 here and a friend got it for me when she was in Albuquerque or I'd have to more than double that in gas $$. I didn't think about putting another layer on top. I just tucked a few plants among the scrubbers but the grasshoppers got in and ate everything anyway. I guess you found out how this pond thing takes over. My husband confirmed with photos - 2 months between planning the first 19 gal container garden to filling the 8 foot stock tank. Oh my, what's next? I've got the long list-o-plants too. Maybe someone here can tell us how to decide what NOT to get. I figure 3 medium sized lilies is all that should go in my tank. Three! I, like perhaps other members, didn't have a clue as to what the original thread contained. After doing a search with the engine provided on the homepage I found it on page three. Do you need to copy and paste things on the external HD? I shouldn't think so. Apart from the automatic backing up we have it set to do, if there is any individual file or folder we want to put on it, we simply left click on the file's or folder's icon and drag it to the icon for the external HD and it gets copied there. We installed the entire Oxford English Dictionary program on my husband's computer's external HD and it works fine, but a couple of other programs just wouldn't run right when we tried to install them on it. Come to think of it, the OED has a verification process by which you have to show the computer that you actually possess the CDs for it, and that may be why the company doesn't mind which drive you keep it on. We haven't tried downloading any programs to the ext. HD yet, but it seems likely to me that many--especially the expensive programs that don't provide for periodically proving that you have the CDs--will very likely not run well from there. However, from what Cboy writes, with the help of Acronis, it looks like you can backup the whole of your internal HD, which would include programs. So, being new to external HDs myself (a 500GB Maxtor One Touch 4), I'd like to ask Cboy if you can actually remove programs from C:\ (to save space) and then run them from the external drive instead, or if what Acronis does is only to save them so you can reinstall them in C:\ after a disaster and run them from there.

mtvhike, don't you first want to ask how much data storage he's using and what kind of files they are? So I'll ask - big al, what kind of files do you have and how much space is being used in total? A file is a file is a file as far as a Windows version is concerned. File compatibility can be in issue with different versions of a program/application, but not with different versions within the same operating system family. And sometimes not between families either. I'm not a fan of having more than one internal drive, unless the extra space is needed for apps using very large files frequently accessed. That's true for few people. You're really better off having backups files disconnected and offline and not on the PC you're using ( to be safe from power surges) and with extra files on cheap external drives easily replaced.

Maybe the problem is that drag and drop has decided it doesn't like a program or two. For mp3gain, instead of doing drag and drop, try clicking on File, Add Files, and then go through the Windows Explorer-like screen to add the files you want from your external drive. Does that work?

Or, there are other free programs that do the Replay Gain analysis for volume leveling. Foobar and Winamp come to mind, there are many others. In addition, these two have many other handy features.

The programmes work fine.
I decided to delete and reload the tunes and pics onto
my HD's and all works well now.
