photo size

Sometimes when someone sends me a photo, it is so large it fills the screen. It also happens when I send pics. Is there a setting I can change so it is a nice normal size? Sometimes I would like to make a copy, but not the size I'm getting! Thanks in advance. BT

A good size to send photos through email is either 800 x 600 or 1024 x 768. Bitmap also creates a larger file than jpg but generates a better quality picture. Dial up friends like jpg ;~)

If you have nothing better for photo editing then MS Paint will do the job for you. To open Paint click Start, All programs, Accessories,Paint.

In Paint click File, Open and find your image you wish to shrink and open it. Now once the image is visible click Image, Attributes....

In this new window select the size you wish to reduce to and click OK. Then click File, Save as... and give it a name. You can just click Save but that overwrites the original and you may want to keep that the larger size if you intend to print it at some future time.

CAUTION! When you resize be aware of the format to keep the images looking correct. The standard size is 4 x 3 and multiples thereof. So 640x480 - 800x600 - 1024x768 are all correct so that you do not create short fat people or tall skinny ones. Turn for portrait of course

When I do that in Paint, it resizes to end up with the left top corner of the picture only. Not the whole picture.

I have resized my photos in Paint using the "Stretch/skew" by entering the number 45% for a 1776 x 1128 turning it into a 800 x 508 size.
As easy as that.

But there is a super free little windows power toy you can go get from the microsoft power toys site called Image Resizer This PowerToy enables you to resize one or many image files with a right-click It is wonderful! you just right click on the picture and select resize and you get a box you can pick sizes from or set up a custom size. I don't think their is a size restriction any longer as I just uploaded a few photos and they were originals as I didn't resize them. I think this forum does it automatically for you.

Wow, thank you for correcting me Urlee. You are absolutely correct and I apologise to anyone who may have thought that was the answer.

So the best way is to get the free Irfanview - which I always use to resize. It is very easy to do there plus you can resize in bulk rather than mess with one at a time if you wish.

That's ok owbist, you meant well.
Paint works great (stretch/skew) if you know what % to use for what size you are dealing with.

Irfanview is great.

I use PSP7 as long as I have that program and use it for everything.

there is a super little power toy for windows that puts a resize option in your right click menu and it works great for sizing pics to be sent in email. You did not mention if you use xp or vista there is this tool for both, here is the one for xp

I love picnik it is online and free to use it allows you to resize pics as well as do a lot of neat stuff to them. It is very easy to use. There are also firefox add ons to use with it. You might want to check it out.
