Windows 7 not waking from sleep mode?

A couple of times I couldn't get windows 7 to wake from sleep mode. I clicked the enter key, moved the mouse and nothing would wake it up. Computer wouldn't shut down with the power button either. Maybe I didn't give it enough time?
Finally as a last resort I unplugged the entire system.
I thought sure I had lost my computer because the monitor came back with a frozen, funky look multiple colored stripes. (sorry, that's the only way I know to describe it.) I WAS logged into a website when I put it to sleep. Should I close all windows before putting to sleep? Wondering if that was the problem? I should add that after several seconds the screen came up showing the page I had been on. It was frozen briefly then came around.

No known viruses id being reported. Just had a couple of small issues with malware cleaned up. Nothing much there.

I have been reading on that site. Trying to sort it out.

One more question..under my power options where it says choose what the power buttons do? Mine was set to put computer to sleep when I push the power button. Shouldn't that be set to turn computer off instead? I changed that option but now unsure if I should have since this setting must have come from factory setting. IDK
Thanks for advice on other problem.

Not necessarily shaxhome, some monitors can get stuck in displaying that mode and not display the video like the desktop. Dell has a history of that and so does LG. Your best option as has been said is to try another monitor first. If changing the monitor does not produce results, then it's time to look at the video card driver or on board video driver. The VGA connector on the back of the computer is usually the blue connector 15 pins, the DVI cable is usually a white connector on the back of the computer. Hibernate sometimes gets turned off in Vista by some clean up programs. If hibernate is turned off on the shut down menu, you will need to re-enable it. If you don't it will never work with any keystrokes. If you know how to open a black administrator cmd window, you can enable it by typing in; powercfg -h on Some laptops have special key presses to enter sleep and hibernate... Is this a laptop ? If so what is the make and model. Maybe someone will find and read your manual.

Snidely, Me??? Think what you may as I cannot speak to it. On this thread no one has brought up the concept of work environment so that perspective was not addressed. My home system is on 24/7. It has a collage of pictures of my grandchildren as a screen saver for my pleasure. For no other reason. No type of power management is used. In the past, the consensus of members here was they only use power management in the hopes of protecting the system to make it last longer. During my entire attendance at work my system is engaged even when not attended. It is the secured database portals which time me out after inactivity unless I do it manually. I have never seen anyone leave a laptop unattended in public. My recollection is they are actively being used, directly monitored, or shut down and stored. In any of these cases power management is not necessary. Finally, there are only two schools of thought that are certain for all; death and that politicians waste taxpayer money. Most of the time I wake up before my 5:30 AM alarm goes off. Up, turn on the TV, and the computer, get dressed, read email and the paper online while eating breakfast. Then, peek in here at the KT, and on facebook, and get ready to go to work. If I ride my bike I leave the house 15 minutes earlier than if I drive. I work till 1:30 PM officially, but most times don't get out till after 2:00 I return to my bed after the 10:00 PM news and start the whole fun scenario again. :) Moni

By the way- I have the moon button for sleep mode and I've always just used that for sleep.

No. To turn a PC off using the off button you need to hold the button in for 4 seconds.

Why do you feel the need to put the computer to sleep, it will do so automatically after the time period you have set in your options.

About putting the computer to sleep? I was wondering the same thing, why do I even do that? Like you said it will do that automatically anyway.

You should not turn your PC off at the power button, but rather do a proper shut down at your START on taskbar.

Aputernut is correct, I should have added that caveat. Pressing the off button for 4 seconds is the last thing if all else fails.

Yes, I do know you're not suppose to shut computer down with the power button but is was an all else failed situation and even that didn't work.
Step two for me was to unplug the thing to shut it down and that's probably a terrible thing to do. But eventually it did start back up after several scary seconds. I just hope I don't have that problem again but it does seem to be an issue for some with windows 7.

Does windows 7 Control Panel / Troubleshooting ... have an item for 'Power ? I might run that .

one of the latest updates for windows 7 was bugged and makes the graphic card not wake up again after sleep mode!

if u have a laptop take out the battery and wait for the laptop to empty its power supply and then put the battery in again and turn it on! on a stationary unplugg the powercord and wait

this will fix the problem! i experience the same thing on my laptop and this ALLWAYS fix the problem!
