Chromebook Debate-Love or Hate?

I did a search and found nothing on this forum in regards to the Google Chromebook which surprised me. As I research this product on-line I am finding many who have and use Chromebook love it vs. many who think the format and device to be ridiculous and useless. I am intrigued because I am looking for a couch laptop, something simple for my husband to surf the web with, and something we can take with us when we travel.

I have my eye on refurbished, for $165.00 inclusive and am wondering what feedback you may have.

Also, this particular Chromebook, come with OS installed, but no OS product key. Could that be a problem in the long run?

This is wi-fi powered. Do you have wi-fi network in your home? If so, this might be a good buy. I would worry about the lack of product key.

If you don't have product key, you may not be able to re-install the os if the laptop crashes. There will be no guarantee that any discs for os will be of any use until you need to use them. Make a copy of os first thing when you do buy one. Personally, I would not spend my money on anything that did not have the product key.

Thank you for all of your thoughts. Housefairy - I really like the idea about contacting our realtor. Agreed about the permits as well, we would definitely not move forward without them. The way the house is configured we have a small living room attached to the dining room The living room is just the right size for a piano and couple of chairs, so I'm content to keep that space in order for our piano to not have to be in our family room. Fahrenheit - for our family this would by far be the most functional. And I like your point about office space constantly changing. I've been wondering if the whole office of the main two story hall-way that is in every house around here will soon be out of style. But perhaps that thinking is just self-serving since I'm thinking of removing mine! hcj- my home is notin' special. Just part of a builder track where you have models A,B,C or D to choose from. So I do believe most of the homes in the neighborhood have some sort of 1st floor office space. Realistically, we will probably be here at least 5 years, but most likely more like 10. I don't see my husband changing his job anytime soon and if we stay in this area, we won't move. We have put in a lot of sweat equity already and it might take me a long time to get the energy to start over! (This is the third house we have remodeled in the last 10 years, so I'm beat!) Without a doubt, by taking away the office I would be so thrilled with my mudroom. It would also solve a lot of annoying elements of our home. 1)We could create a front hall way closet, as there is not one now. (silly designed builder homes) 2)We would have a space to store our vacuum on the first floor. 3) We would be able to enter from our garage without tripping over shoes or someone doing laundry. And 4-10) everything that an incredible laundry room would give us. I guess a call to the realtor might be helpful. Of course 10 years from now the market will expect different things...but a good realtor might be able to see how things might change. Thanks again everyone for your thoughts.

My experience is that downdrafts are not worth the money, even telescoping...they're only marginally effective for pots and pans sitting right next to them and a few inches shorter than the vent. Anything else (farther away, taller) and they're useless. I strongly recommend going with an overhead rangehood...even if it is more expensive and interrupts your view. With an overhead hood, you will get good venting if it's sized appropriately...at least 6" wider than the cooktop, at least 24" (preferably 27") deep, and strong cfms (at least 900). Why? Because there are more and stronger air currents in the middle of the room than against the wall that will more quickly "grab" and spread smoke/grease/odors/etc. throughout the room. Additionally, you have no wall to help corral the smoke/steam/odors/etc. so you need to be sure your hood is big enough & strong enough to capture the effluent as it rises and spreads. I really don't think you'll regret getting an overhead hood...functionality-wise. Of course, your idea to move the cooktop to the perimeter is an even better idea...easier to vent, less expensive to vent, and no "view-buster". Remember, only 10% of the time spent in the kitchen is spent cooking, so put that task on the perimeter and move the Prep Zone (70% of the work/time) to the island so you can enjoy the company and view!

I'm doing it too! I'm going for a walnut top, either edge grain or plank on a 3x8 island--also with stools and used for prep...but I have decided to waterlox it. Apparently, it's a very natural looking finish...not high gloss at all. With our habit of leaving giant messes overnight after gatherings, I figure it gives a little more protection and I used to have a butcherblock that I actually used for cutting...I loved the look, but once it was well used in areas...it never felt or looked that hygenic! I sanded it down well when we listed the place for sale b/c I knew it would be a problem...however, if you're a big chef, I'm sure you'll appreciate the convenience...as everyone seems to remind us here...go with what you love!

blfenton, I am sorry I missed your question about the lumbar pillows. They are IKEA pillows, and they are slip covered in that pattern, so it worked out well for us. I attached a link to the pillows--they come in several fabric covers and are $19.99 each. On our banquette, we have five right now. I also wouldn't want to have a narrow table, as I don't care to knock knees with anyone. Our table is 43"X 54" oval and has two leaves to lengthen it. The butcher block (and cushion) overhangs the cabinets a little bit, so that our legs aren't hitting the drawers or hardware below. I have sat on benches where the hardware was kind of in the way, and I kept hitting it with my calves, so I kept that in mind when designing this particular bench. I think having it done with springs and upholstered like real furniture as circuspeanut suggests would be optimal for seating. I would have loved that! I am certainly not skilled in that area and haven't the money to have it professionally done, so we went the budget route. One of the most beautiful dining rooms I have seen had a loveseat set in a bay window, with the table pulled up with chairs in contrasting fabrics. It looked elegant, yet totally comfortable--a place you would love to sit with the girlfriends over coffee and treats gabbing for hours. *sigh* Here is a link that might be useful: IKEA lumbar pillows

What? How confusing this is to me. All of the refurbished say "OS installed" but some say "OS Licence Key" missing. Anyhow I ended up ordering one that included the OS Licence key for $165.00 including tax and S&H. I won't know if it will come with the free 100 gb google drive or the 12 free in-flight passes until I fire it up.

Thank you all for taking the time to respond. I got it from cowboom.com which is a Best Buy company so returning it should be no problem.

I am obsessed with cowboom.com, and pleased with all the purchases I have made with them in the past. These are the items people trade in or return to Best Buy that they fix up and sell. Products and prices change all day long so you have to research and then be ready to jump when the item becomes available. That's what I did tonight with the Chromebook so I am ready to give it a try.

My comment could have been wrong, let me back it up a step.

My understanding is that a Chromebook has the Chrome OS (developed by Google) preloaded. The hardware is designed for the OS and vice vesa. (the OS is a Linux derivative). The software is customized for a variety of features, including background updating.

Your support for the OS should be from the hardware manufacturer, I'm not sure why an issue of a key would enter into it, but I'll end my comment with what I'm sure of.

Chromebooks seem to be an interesting halfway house between a laptop and a tablet - it's laptop-ish but with stripped down features and limited capabilities. But, with those capabilities most people use most. I'm sure you'll enjoy using it, and its light weight makes it very portable.

No product key for Chrome OS.
I've used a chromebook for months and I can say you need to worry nothing, just use it. However, if you have any problem, there is a huge community that may help you(link below).

This is a timely thread for me. Even though we have a laptop, pc and tablet, I had done some reading and decided to purchase a chromebook yesterday. As snidely says it's different than a laptop or tablet, sort of a mixture of both. It's perfect for logging on to the web and accessing anything there that you'd usually do with a laptop. Mine is the HP Chromebook 14 with a 14" screen and I'm very happy with the screen resolution and how easy it is to use. You can't download freestanding program as (from my understanding) there is no hard drive. Everything is stored in the cloud. It's Google based so you can use any app in the google play store and it has its own apps for word processing, spread sheets, etc. It I think it's going to be a lot of fun.
