DVD burner won't burn??

I have an HP dv2000 laptop. It has a built in DVD player/burner. I'm trying to make some disks to get some of the junk off my computer, make some photo DVD's etc, and for some reason every time I try the program says that it can't find a DVD recorder! I've checked my drivers for the device but Windows says it's up to date. I use Vista, if that matters any. Can anyone help me figure out what's going on?

If you place a music or data DVD or CD in the drawer does it play the music or offer to display the data?

If the DVD burner is shot you would probably be better to buy an external DVD player/burner rather than replace the internal one.

Check your device manager. What does it tell you is there?

Are you sure it's a DVD burner? Some older PCs had DVD readers that were CD read/write.

Coho, I posted on the other thread before I saw this. Several years ago, I purchased a computer that had Norton installed. I could not burn a DVD on that computer until after I removed every trace of Norton. When I called Tech support at Norton, they told me that it was a known problem, and sent me a refund check. That was many years ago however, and I wouldn't think they would still be having that problem.

"Coho, it just seems strange that both of your computers would have this problem at the same time, and since the CDs work ok it just seems to point to the DVDs as the problem. I have found that some of the blank cheaper brands of DVDs do seem to have a higher failure rate when they get older. I no longer store anything that I want to keep only on DVDs, but make sure I have copies on external hard drives." As do I. I would much rather send a DVD to Alaska family than my external drve. Guess will reinstall Windows in about 2 weeks unless someone comes up with a better way. Thanks

Elaine, I apologize for taking so long to get back to you. I have attached a link so you may download newer firmware. 2.81 is from 2/25/05. 2.03E is the newest version. NECND6500A-V203E.zip is the file you want. Unzip and run the .exe file. DO NOT SHUT DOWN THE COMPUTER WHILE THE BURNER IS BEING FLASHED. Additionally, if you are using philips media, dump them. The media is not good. Stick with TDK, Maxell, Taiyo Yuden, or Ritek RiData (my personal favorite). What brand of media are you trying to use? Let me know how you do. Some players are very finicky. I had to experiment with brands and format (R+, R-, RW+, RW-) before finding a surefire disk for my Toshiba player (several years old). Verbatim DVD-Rs for me, exclusively.
