no sound using hdmi to hdtv windows 7

I have a HDTV with multiple HDMI inputs and I have dedicated one to "external" sources.

One goal is to watch Youtube on my large HDTV.

When I connect my 1 year old Gateway W8 Laptop to the HDTV via HDMI both the video and audio that would be seen/heard on the notebook is transferred to my HDTV.

But, when I do the same with my 4 year old Toshiba Notebook the video comes through just fine, but no audio.

Is there something in W7 that has to be set to get full HDMI functionality? I assume the port on my Toshiba is HDMI, it is physically and the Notebook screen is fatefully displayed on the HDTV, just as it would on a VG remote display.

To connect the office Toshiba laptop to our Poly-Com, after physically connecting and booting up you have to hit the F3 to configure the output. Give it a try. Maybe?

Thanks, Owbist. I tried that yesterday, but nothing changed with WMP. However, I thought it might be a good idea to redo the procedure. Some striking changes occurred this time. All of my WAV files now open in Windows Live Movie Maker. I tried to play a music CD and got the box that said Windows couldn't open the file. When I checked the properties of the music, it shows as a CDA File... (I'm not alarmed - I know there has to be a fix.) OK, I thought... I'll just go back to the Media Features and redo the procedure. However, there are now no check marks in the WMP or Media Center boxes! I record 3 church services a week on this laptop. I take the sound from - I believe it's called a preamp - (signal too strong directly from mixer) and am able to record in Audacity. I now have audio in Audacity whereas I lost it after the defrag. However, the wav files I made from the audacity project files now open in window movie maker and are unplayable... I don't think I will ever defrag this laptop again!!! :)

I also beleive its in the setup of the dvd player. Try unhooking the player and bring it back to the original tv. I bet it wasn't using component cables , simply composite video. Go into the dvd menu and determine its video output-480i/480p/. Using component video cables allow the dvd player to be in 480p and your picture should look proper. PS- HDMI are not necessaryily better and dont come into play here.

i fyou plan on having HDTV or using a BluRay player then you will need HDMI. coax/rca cables will not provide HD properly. better than having a certain cable put in teh wall right now, you should have him run a 1" PVC between teh 2 locations so that you can easily fish anything needed later. heck, 10 years from now there is no telling what the cable standard will be.

As you may have already experienced with your newer PC, a lot of YouTube content is not Hi Def. When a lower resolution image is put on a larger screen, the result can be quite unpleasant and even too blurry to watch.

Newer TVs, game players and disk players have built in apps to play sources like YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, Amazon, etc, and a PC isn't necessary. Does your hardware not have any such apps you can use?

Yes I have Roku 2, and it now has access to Youtube - still it must suffer from the same HD shortfall as Netflix, which I also have via Roku. Then too I have only 8 mb DSL (more like 6 mb).

But, using my computer with a wireless keyboard and mouse, I an scroll around the screen to click and type in search strings much easier using the computer to drive Youtube or any other computer accessed information and streaming data.

I don't have a big HDTV, only 30" and only the lower (don't remember the number maybe 1080) lines .
