I Hate Windows 8!

And HP too!

I just bought a brand new HP computer, transferred all my files from my old computer and then find out that Windows 8 will not activate.

After an hour on the phone with Microsoft, they tell me to contact HP! What a joke! I was on hold for over an hour and transferred 5 times. Each time they transferred me, the non English speaking person would say " Not my department, let me transfer you" ARGHHHHH.

The last person just told me to take it back to the store and get a new one. Really?????

Okay, now that I have vented my utter frustration and anger, can someone tell me how to purge my computer of all my personal information before I return it?

Microsoft and HP's web support pages are ridiculous. I think they purposely make it a confusing pile of c*** on purpose!

How were you able to put any of your files/personal information on the computer if Win 8 was never activated?

Just used the transfer tool.

That all worked but when I first sign on, it tells me to activate but then it won't. Microsoft took remote control of my computer and they could not activate it either. They blamed it on HP. HP didn't even try to help.

Jean: I have Win 8.1 and it took me several tries to figure out. I have read recently that they will be making a change to Win 8 and make it more like Win 7 which mirrored closely with XP. If your uploading pics from your Picture folder on your PC this is how I did it. Open Pbucket and click on UPLOAD, then on the next screen in the upper left corner your will see a tab that says "Your Bucket". From the drop down menu, choose where you want to save the files. AFTER you choose where to save the pictures from the drop down menu, click on Choose Photo/Videos tab in the center of the screen. It should open another screen on your hard drive which has a file labeled "LIBRARIES" among other files.The icon looks like a bunch of file folders. Click on "LIBRARIES" and choose the PICTURE folder. Your photos should be viewable and just choose the ones you want to upload and then click on "OPEN" button on the lower right hand side of your screen. It should close and Pbucket should start loading. Just the best way I know to explain how to do it. Julia

Control Panel\Networking\Manage Wireless Networks Move your router/wife name to the top. Right click your router wifi name, Properities. Look at the options. I assume people have talked you through that. If I were you I would make sure my wifi name was unique and not the default netgear name. Make sure you have good security on the wifi. And I think you should be good to go . And if that doesnt work for you waking from sleep... I'd have no problem with setting the router to have a unique local lan IP and setting the computer to fixed IP. Then it has nobody it can connect to except your unique LAN IP. Keeps it Simple ! right! ;)

I am canceling my service with Comcast. I have the $4.99 charge to cover me in case I need to have a service call. Well in April I did have a service call as one of my two phone lines was not working. The technician who came out broke my phone and did not tell me that he broke it. I found that out much later -- it should have been a hint when he did not want me to hold the phone. Then he or Comcast put a $70.00 charge on my account. When I called Comcast, I told them about this, they admitted that it should not have been there and they told me that they would credit my account on the next bill, but that I was expected to pay it and they would issue a credit. I need to check the statutes but I don't think you can collect on disputed charges, especially when you are aware that YOU made the mistake. For the $70.00 that should not have been billed, they interrupted the service. I refuse to pay it and have notified my local jurisdiction and the FCC. If you are looking for a cable or internet or phone provider, don't walk past Comcast, run as fast and as far as you can.

I feel the same way about my husband's exwife. I am custodial stepmom of 3 chlldren. My husband has always had custody because the exwife decided one day she no longer wanted to be married or a full-time mother. Before I came along she constantly dumped 99% of her time on my husband, he of course never said no, she had full control of her old household only she lived in a differnt place and had her own life. It was a very unhealthy situation. My husband just never stood up to her, he struggled to keep a full-time job and take care of 3 children. I give him tremendous credit because many men in his situation would not be able to take on that responsibilty. Well, then I come along, we get married and all of a sudden she begins to take a deeper interest. Mainly because I would not allow her to control my household and my husband began saying "no", She always used us as her babysitter, whether it was a work meeting, an exerecise class or a European vacation. She has been nothing but a major PIA, she wouldn't pay child support when my husband enforced the order she opened a full blown custody case, suing us for full custody because she did not want to financially support her children. We also have a screwed up schedule. During the school the chldren visit their mother Mon&Tues 4-8pm with alternating weekends. During the summer they visit her Mon-Wed 4-8pm with alternating weekends. The exwife wanted some crazy, they live with her 3days one week, then us 4days, and the next week it was the reverse. Mind you, she only had a 2bedroom condo. All three children sleep in the same bedroom. 2 girls 13&10 and a 8yr old boy. The master had enough sense to reconize that the living arrangemnents were not appropriate and would not grant anymore overnight visits except for the already standing 2 weekends a month. The schedule is crazy. The exwife is crazy. She teaches the children it is ok to lie to us. She is NOT supportative of myself or my husband. She has harrassed us to the point that she is not allowed on our property, she can not contact us by phone, she may only communicate via email, unless it is an emergency related to that day's schedule, then she may leave a message on our cell phone. She would call my husband at work and pull him out of meetings with the CEO of the company for some nonsense question. HE would get numerous calls on a daily basis. I never saw 2 divorced people talk on a daily basis. We have insulated ourselves as much as possible but everyday there is some new issue. She never returns clothes that the kids wear over there, one day she sent my ss home with no shoes on. She won't take the kids to baseball games and then tells them we did not give her the information. I could go on and on. But your words say it best I HATE HER!!!!! If I had hindsight my posting would be alot differnt. I would be like that one woman who used to be involved with a man with children. Trying being involved with a man who has custody of his children. The rewards have been few and far between. I have lived this from the first day I moved to where my husband lives (I moved from a different state). So the entire two years of my marriage have been filled with this crap. My husband's relationship with his children has also suffered terribly. I was divorced for 11yrs before I remarried and never experienced one ounce of the trouble I have in this life, and it isn't even my divorce. The best advice I can give you is stand your ground. Say NO, she is responsible for her custodial time. It took my husband a long time to be able to say no, it is very easy for me. I know that he is still uncomfortable with saying no but I help him, Remember you can't let her control your life. Good luck, God Bless. I understand, it's one hell of a way to live.

I feel your frustration as I am in the process of returning a HP Printer. And I cannot figure Windows 8. Tried some of the tutorials but they did not help me go from XP to 8. Ended up fixing the problem with my Windows XP PC, which I thought was a goner. The new PC is just sitting unused now. If I am going to have so much trouble learning 8, I might as well get a tablet and suffer with something that is REALLY different....

Most stores will exchange or give you a refund. Best Buy will do that up to 3 months. I agree you need to call HP about the problem. System restore did not work on this computer when I got it. HP's tech came on my PC and fixed it for me. He knew right away what the problem was. I don't think yours is a W 8 problem, just a computer problem. I called MS one time about works and they helped me but were a little upset with Compaq. They said they sold the Works software to Compaq for 25 cents apiece on the condition they would support it.

I have only had a problem with HP support one time, but it was not online, I called them. The tech wanted change the hard drives size and I had a feeling she didn't know what she was talking about. I did not do it and I was right.

Long story. Maybe it will make you smile, at my red face experience.

I have always used HPs, from the first PC I ever had, which was 20 years ago, until now. They were bought either at Staples or WalMart, off the shelf.

This time because I was determined to find a HP with WIN7, I went on line and ordered this one from HP. I asked HP if my present printer and monitor would be compatible. They said the printer would, but the monitor might not and explained why.

So I included a new monitor with the order. When it arrived my DGSIL came and set it up for me. During the set up we had a bad thunderstorm and even lost the internet. He left and planned to come back another time.

Next day, it was working, except for some fine tuning which I did, so he didn't need to come back, I didn't use the printer for a while, but when I did want to print something I found it didn't work. I contacted HP online and expressed my disappointment with them because my printer didn't work. I received a reply which included a suggestion that I try a xxx cable?

I pulled the printer out to look at the connections, only to see that it wasn't even plugged in!! Apparently when DGSIL was hooking up all those cords, he failed to put one back!!.

No, it was not HPs fault. I replied to them with a thank you for the information and told them the printer is working. Didn't get into what the problem was.

Magic and luis pr, sorry about all the troubles you have had. Have you considered returning them and asking HP to find a WIN7 for you?

BTW, my reply from HP was written by someone whose English was obviously not her first language. This is part of our world now.

Magic go here for tutorials on how to return your computer to factory default settings.

Once completed you might try to activate online again just out of curiosity. I would not go further than that, if it fails do as they said, return it for replacement.

Windows 8 you would want to run the Reset which sort of Reinstalls windows without saving your files or settings.

You would find it in Settings / Change PC Settings. Cant tell you exactly where there as I have win8.1 which is different. But look around, easy to find.. there is Refresh which saves your personal files, and Reset which gets rid of them.

//////////////////////////////```` If it gave you an error number or message when it wont activate.. maybe post it here. and somebody might by chance tell you how to try to fix that.

Thank you everyone.

I ended up manually deleting all my pictures, files, etc.

There was no financial information on it so I should be okay. I am leaving now to return it.

I imagine even if they did try to resell it, they would have to fix it first and then scrub it clean.

Perhaps that's how you received it, Magic. It had been put back on the shelf after having been returned by some other buyer who had discovered the same problem issues. Too bad there's not a way to ensure that it won't happen again to some unsuspecting soul.

I hope you have better luck with your next purchase.

When you buy a new HP computer, HP provides support for both Windows and the computer. If you call Microsoft support for such an OEM computer, Microsoft will immediately inform you that you need to call HP. Microsoft would not spend an hour with you before telling you this.
