List Of All Files Etc?

Howdy. Win7. Last year I went from XP to Win7. For one reason or the other I use to look at all of my files, sub files, sub-sub-sub files, etc . Now I can't seem to find it how to get to that very lengthy list. Can anyone tell me how to get back to the list that shows everything on my system? Thanks, Gene

type into the run line, or the browser address bar;
C:

Or Double click the computer icon on your desktop.

You might want to visit Control Panel / Folder Options / View tab, if you want to see hidden and system files.

Thanks Mikie. I have Dell560 Desktop/IE10/ Win7. I can't find what you suggested. Sorry I'm so computer dumb. The only "Computer" is on the left above the "Start" icon on my desktop. Clicking it will tell me how much space is used on "C" and that I have a "D" drive installed. I'm unsure where the run line might be. The only browser address bar I know of is either on the Internet or my email site. I don't have a Folder Options in my Control Panel icons and, therefore, no View Tab. Back on XP Windows Explorer would give me everything. Now it's just icons saying Libraries, Documents, Etc. Thanks, Gene

The pictures of game controllers are microsofts way of controlling what you buy and what will work with Direct X. If you want to play a game (don't say you will never want to game...you will never know, there is many that have made that mistake) those pictures of game controllers are Microsofts game configuration maps. Microsoft will only support those controllers approved, and they have fits when you download the game controller's own drivers wherher approved or not. This is all part of Direct X and Microsoft cornering the gaming market with the XBOX and PC...which is a multi-billion dollar market. Big...big money in gaming. Best to just leave them there. marf

Thanks everyone. Funny that Jane was posting a similar question at the same time (I didn't realize when I saw the name of her thread that she was aiming to copy file names). It worked for me to do control print, then control V into a word document. A little awkward in terms of getting all the details to show - but certainly doable. Mikie - I tried the dragging and dropping. Now that was the kind of solution I wanted. It saves it in a simple list - without all this blank space from the screen shot. What an incredibly helpful tip. The first time I tried saving it I chose as text - but that was a mess. The second time I chose as a web page - is that the correct way to do it? And will it stay on my computer? This brings up a problem I've had but didn't think about asking before. I have often saved webpages - esp. from this forum and the cooking forum. But when I go back to open them up, they present a whole list of different files - like a logo from the page, etc. It's no longer complete and recreatable. Is that because I saved it in the wrong format? I had just recently deleted a couple of these when I thought there was no resurrecting the information. Glad I didn't erase more than a few. So if I want to, say, save this thread, I'd hit file, then save as, and choose web page complete? web page html? text files? or all files? Looking at the mess of files from things I saved in the past, I suspect I chose all files - but I honestly don't recall making a selection (and certainly I didn't understand the selection). This is such a useful way for me to save some information. Someone may come along with a recommendation for a directory listing program but in the mean time, if you're still running XP you might try this: Click "Start" Click "Run" Type "cmd.exe" Click "Go" Paste in this command: dir /S "%USERPROFILE%\My Documents" > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\listing.txt" Press "Enter" If all goes well, you'll end up with is a text file on you desktop called "listing.txt". It should contain a directory listing of your "My Documents" folder and all subdirectories that you can open with notepad/wordpad and print. If you're using a later version of Windows, I don't know. This command may or may not work with Windows 7: dir /S "%USERPROFILE%\Documents" > "%USERPROFILE%\Desktop\listing.txt"

Back again, and thanks. I double clicked on Computer and then clicked on the bar showing how much space I had on C. Wow! A panel came up showing what was on my computer with the ability to continue a step down process and moved to more detailed files.

I'm still looking for a page I copied off the Net using Faststone Capture (that started my questions). I didn't give it a file name but gave it a title. Anyway, now I can start digging a little deeper.

By the way, I use to search IE by using a date if all else failed. Now it seems unless one has a file name, or part of it, they're out of luck. Any thoughts. Thanks again. Gene

You can also get to Windows Explorer by right clicking the start button then click Explore.

To sort by date is easy. Look at this site and you'll see the first image. If yours looks like that simply click on the 'Date modified' header, click again if you prefer reverse order.

If you view shows icons instead click the small icon to the right of 'New folder' and in the drop down menu click to show details - or which ever you prefer, play a little to see the options there.
