Can I fix my Outlook Express problem?

The following message is what I get when I go to retrieve my e-mail in Outlook Express. "The server responded with an error. Account: 'centurylink.net', Server: 'POP3.bjmaster', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR DNS Error: NXDOMAIN. You have attempted to connect to a non-existent server. Please check your settings and try again.', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC90"

A friend was visiting and using my computer, and even though I finally got high-speed, he thought he could make it faster. I do think whatever he did did make some searches faster, but ever since he 'worked his magic' I cannot access my Outlook Express e-mail. I can get my e-mail from my server page, but I have used Outlook Express ever since I had a computer, approx. 10 yrs. or so, and I prefer it. Can anyone help?

PS:Yes, I did contact my friend, but he does not seem to be getting excited about trying to fix it.

iwoagirl2006, Thank you for the info on Microsoft PowerToys, I never heard of it before now. I will have to look this over, it sounds pretty neat. pkponder, is there a check next to Block Images and other external content in HTML email? There is no checkmark in that box. What type of picture file are you attempting to attach? I have some pictures from my camera (Kodak easyshare camera)and I took them from the Kodak gallery and transfered them into a folder. I then resized some of those pictures. I right click on the picture itself then choose send to, then Mail Recipient and it goes to Outlook Express. It's worked before but not now. I just happened to notice when I went to my other clipart folders that when I put my mouse on a clipart it is now showing Kodak Easyshare, those cliparts did not come from Kodak Easyshare they came from the Microsoft website where I got them from Microsoft Publisher to make cards. Why did Kodak easyshare take over my cliparts and how do I get it back to normal? Now I know what has happened the Kodak software is set as the default picture viewer. I don't know how that happened. How do I Change the application back to Windows Media Viewer? When it is set to the Media Viewer I can do everything in Outlook Express as I use to and open the paperclip to see the pictures that come in to me. The search that I did really doesn't help me much with this problem but it did let me know what happened and when I checked out every picture, clipart etc that I have in my folders it shows Kodak Easyshare .gif or jpeg etc. Now that I know what the problem is I need to know how to get my clipart etc to open with the Windows Picture Viewer. Any idea's? thirdfrt!!!

Owbist, I think you just fixed my problem. After becoming stuck on the deleting of the temporary files.....I skipped over a couple of steps in the repair kit. I read the part which about when suddenly messages that you sent are no longer being sent to the "Sent Folder". That is exactly what is happening here. The first step to try....was to compact all folders. That fixed my problem! I am no longer sending multiple emails. Sent emails are going to the Sent Folder. Wow.....this is great !! Do you think I should go back and complete the removing of the temporary files even though it seems my problem is solved? Owbist....I cannot thank you enough. This is the best computer help website on the internet. The Computer Help Forum has gotten me out of many jams. I thank everyone who comes to this forum.....and special thanks to all who provide suggestions and solutions. Larry

gmom, Here is the link that is most likely to save your day: www.OEHelp.com/OETips Scroll down to the red 'Update'. Have a read, but before you do anything else, download the free programme Outlook Express Quick Backup (don't worry about the command line instructions because you never use them - you just push the buttons). Before you run OE Quick Backup create a new Backup Folder (preferably on another drive) e.g. 'Current'. Run OE Quick Backup and select the 'Current' folder then click 'Backup All'. Once your latest data is safely backed up in 'Current' create a couple more folders e.g. 'Old 2008' and 'Old 2007'. This is because, if things work o.k., you are likely to end up with several .dbx files with the same name and you need to save them in different places - as explained in the next paragraph. So, to recover e.g. an old "Sent" email folder copy sent.bak and save it to your current identity as sent1.dbx and then backup that to "Old 2008". A quick word about .bak files - when Widows saves a later version of any file with the same name as the original one it changes the extension of the original file to .bak e.g. text.txt to text.bak and program.exe to program.bak. This gives you only one chance to 'easily' recover your data because if you save again using the same name then the first .bak file is overwritten - this is windows way of preventing your hard drive from becoming full with obsolete files. N.B. My Windows theory might not be 100% correct (I am both old and self-taught!) but the general principles are about right and it could save you from corrupting anything that you do manage to recover. I did a system restore thinking it would restore everything back to before he messed with the computer. It did restore things I cleaned off my desktop, etc. but it did not fix my e-mail. I noticed a week before this all transpired that when I went in to check my e-mail I needed to enter my password which I did not have to do in the past. Could something have messed up my Outlook Express before my friend ever tried to add speed?

Sounds like something happened to the server (incoming) entry. POP3.bjmaster doesn't sound to me like a valid server name. If it's a centurylink.net account...I am guessing that the incoming mail server should be pop.centurylink.net. That is just a wild guess based on standard nomenclature.

To edit the setting, in Outlook Express, click Tools, then Accounts, go to the mail tab, select the account and click Properties on the right. Now go to the servers tab and enter the correct incoming mail server name. You might have to contact your ISP to get the correct server name. I believe that you can save your password in properties too.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. To give you an update, I contacted my server, and we installed my e-mail address in Outlook Express. In fact, I did it at least three times, with no success. They think it is an Outlook problem and gave me an 800# to contact Microsoft, which I did. He said he could give me a couple of websites to check out, which I think are the same ones suggested by DA. It looks very complicated to me. His other suggestion was that he put me in contact with a tech, and when finished I would be billed $60. No thanks. I think I will give up on OE and use my server e-mail.

It is a hard lesson to learn as you found out, but one always has to think of the potential consequences when a relative or "friend" tinkers with your system, even with the best of intentions.

I've seen the negative results all too often.

My server switched to web based and in order to receive through Outlook Express, I had to go through where pkponder mentioned to get it to work. (winXP)
I then added my gmail accounts to send and receive through OE which was a blessing being I am on dialup and taking forever to load at the website.

urlee, I know what you mean about dialup. I just got high speed in February.

I did find the answer to my problem with OE.

Just on the off chance something might show up I checked my e-mail settings at my server for my e-mail. When I clicked the button to make changes it showed I had nine letters (shown as dots) in my password, but I knew it should have only 8. I deleted what was there and re-entered my password and saved it. I then went to OE and low and behold it worked. I have no explanation how the password could have gotten changed since it has worked since Feb. when I got high speed and they helped me set up OE as my e-mail. I don't know what my friend did to give me a little more speed, but I don't think he would have been in my server website. Go figure? I am just glad I found it, and it is working.
