I have been using Thunderbird with a few add-ons on this Vista system for several years now. I have three Hotmail accounts configured through it. It does all I want it to, and more.

That was simple enough. I'm sure I'll have questions tho.

I liked OE for my email, but it didn't come with my W 7 Home Premium. I downloaded Window live mail. It was frustrating until I learned about the quick access bar. Now I like it as well as OE.

BTW, I like my email on my computer. It is online with my cable server, but I set it up to come thru WLM.

Pooh Bear, I had the same problem deciding what mail program to use. I love OE. I tried Thunderbird for a while, but I just couldn't make myself like it. I had decided I would not use Windows Live Mail, but that is what I finally settled on. It has many features in common with OE, but some differences and takes getting used to, but I like it just fine. I still use my XP computer more than I do Windows 7, but that's because I prefer a desktop and the Win 7 is a laptop.

According to a betanews.com article, Opera browser (which will be switching to the Chrome-like engine for future browser releases) is discontinuing its built-in email client as part of that browser. A beta release of the new Opera Mail stand-alone email client is available for download (the first link provided in the article below). As I say, it's a beta release, but according to the first paragraph of the article, it's "based on the integrated Opera email client found in the current version of Opera 12.15 FINAL."

I don't know how a 'beta' release of a stand-alone client relates to the fact that it's from a very stable version of the client in the Opera browser, but so far my experience of the stand-alone client is positive.

Anyway.... Warning: Opera's client uses the labeling system (before Gmail had it) and does not use folders as such. It may take some getting used to for those coming from OE, but I thought I'd at least mention this new-comer to the list of offline email clients. It may be one to keep an eye on. :-)

I installed Windows Live on my computer. This includes Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Movie Maker, Windows Live Photo Gallery. Windows Live Messenger has been recently replaced by Skype.

I have added all my email accounts (Google, Yahoo, etc.) to Windows Live Mail. Easy to use and the Help files are pretty good.

You do not have to install all the components, just those you think are useful to you. You can also update at a later time.

I have used Thunderbird for many years..I guess since NetScape.
The only thing I don't like is the Tabs.. If U get lazy (LAZY not me :-D) they really can pile up.

I also use WLM also and it is simple to use if you use the quick access tool bar. I didn't like the big tool bar on top. There is really no learning to use it if you have used OE or other emails of that type. I just found the tools I liked to use like insert pictures, fonts, etc., right click and added them to the quick access bar, then minimized the ribbon.
