question of curiosity, senior wants to know

we use a virus checker for computer, phones literally do the same thing as they do, does one need to run a virus check on them as well? This came to me out of the blue the other day, and as this is the place to come and ask, guess I am asking in the right place? And, if a virus checker isn't use, why not? Someone who can explain this would be greatly appreciated.

You can google cell phone virus and get loads of info.

This procedure is already being used diagnostically and is called pre-implantation genetic diagnosis, something different than stem cell research. When a person knows they have/may be carriers of certain diseases caused by a defective gene, and are having IVF they can have this done on each embryo and those non-affected ones can then be used for implantation. The product of conception is then implanted, one cell short and the defective prospective embryos disgarded. So, for people like this who have an increased probability of conceiving an affected child ........I'm sure they consider the one cell short implantation a much better risk than proceding with a "natural" pregnancy and playing the odds. Would I have this done? I dunno because it's difficult to put oneself in the shoes of somebody who is facing those circumstances. If I wanted a guarantee that I would not pass along an hereditary disease to a child, I might. I'd also have to be wealthy. These options are prolly not available to the average person, I suspect.

Fun question and discussion! I'll spend as much time in the garden as my schedule/travel allows, hah. When the daylight is long enough, I'm definitely out there for an hour, maybe two, before work, and then again after work, plus several hours on the weekend. For me, it's pure fun. My citrus are on drip irrigation and they get soaked twice a week and are amazing, bountiful producers. Everything else gets hand watered by me, which is why I mostly grow plants that love it here, not plants that *can* be grown here. Lots of aloes, cacti, succulents and low water shrubs and flowers. I do quite a few fluffy containers in winter (geraniums/petunias/pansies), and maybe one or two with vincas or something in summer. When my mom last visited she counted 275 pots on the patio, and I've added a few since then, oink oink oink. Most of those are succulents and cacti, with the fluffy things I mentioned above. Anything that gets hand watered by me, gets a pretty strict diet--I try to water once a week or less even in summer. That way when I'm on the road for work/fun they don't really miss me and I don't have to worry (hate that about gardening--worrying about the plants when I'm supposed to be on vacation!). For the leafy things like emu bushes (Eremophila), rosemary, sages, nicotiana, oleanders, hopseed, hollyhocks, and lantana only get water once every ten days when they're established. It keeps rot away and it keeps me from worrying when I'm on the road. Fun discussion! Thanks again for starting and contributing to it. Happy gardening! Grant

The vast majority of my daylilies are in the front yard due to the way our lot is laid out, and I like to keep it clean-looking, so I have been cutting the spent blooms off for appearance-sake - - for the neighbors more than for me. I try to cut at or a little above the area at the base of the flower where it begins to broaden out and have had no ill effect to setting pods. (If there is any doubt about the areas I am talking about, look on the AHS web site daylily dictionary at the picture of a "spent bloom." The area of 'widening' should be easily seen in the picture.) I do the cutting the evening of the next day after the flower opened. If anything, it helps me from knocking into the dried bloom when I am working around the flower area over the next couple of days until the time that it would have normally fallen off anyway. If fertilization has occurred, the pod will grow and push the remainder of the dried blossom off in just a few days. Larry

yes there are definitely infections that can get on smart phones, however since most are Android which is a version of linux it is not like dealing with windows. But there are many good antivirus programs for your Android phones or devices. I recommend Lookout security, Avast is also making it's way up the ladder.

Just like linux on a computer is less likely to be affected by infections so goes it for the linux based Android devices but since they are so popular there are definitely bad guys out there writing bugs to try to mess with them too.

Lookout security and any other antivirus programs can be found in the Android markets or most any of the other popular Android app markets.

Shaddy, what an excellent question. Please don't feel that you have to define yourself as a senior to get respect here as if "seniors ask the funniest questions" and don't know how to Google. I am so glad you asked it.It has been on my mind too.

now as I said I use android phones I am not knowledgeable about things related to Iphone or blackberry never owned one of those. But if your phone takes apps I would look at the app store that you get your apps from to see if they have any available.

Hey I am a senior too LOL so never be afraid to ask a question it might well be one several others want to know the answer to also. We are all still learning!

for those with Apple products you might want to read through this discussion on one of the Apple forums it addresses the question of AV for apple iphone and mentions what is available.

I googled antivirus app for blackberry and this is what popped up you could try to google it and see if you find others, I know nothing about this however.

I do not use a phone like everyone else does, I use a Trac phone, the idea was just the long distance calls for me. Grand uses USCellular, don't know what "kind" of phone that is, but as he is doing so much with his pics, info, for art school, wondered if there might be something he should be doing to protect that information for his own benefit. Thanks for all the good links, answers, and thoughts. I don't know that my situation has been changed by this, still just need for long distance, so not a problem I believe for me, was just curious as to what "others" do with their data etc., to protect from virus, etc.
