zep that is the comcast that I was given when I moved to the new house, I think it said it could go up to 16 on download, nice speed and I am only paying $20 a month so no complaints. I was so used to my Fios I was afraid I would hate anything else but so far so good. In regards to the DSL upgrade issue sometimes when they do those upgrades it takes a while for everyone to see any improvements, and sometimes they don't put the upgrade on everyone sometimes you have to call and ask them why you are not seeing any improvement> especially if there was any price increase. Since it is DSL it will certainly depend on the CO you are closest to and how it is configured and how far you are from it. I loved Verizon fios I was one of the original test houses for the first installs of fios, this was at my previous home. I never had any problems or down time. There will be a battery backup system in your garage or somewhere. When power goes out the battery backup will keep the phone and Internet up for a period of time. It does regular self tests, when you need a new battery that is your responsibility. They provided a specific modem / router that the tech set up while doing the install. I don't know if this has changed. I would have gone with fios here but it is not available. I would say stop worrying about it the install goes pretty quickly and the tech will help you if you need it just ask them. It was an amazing experience being one of the original test houses. One day suddenly my Internet was down, I had a direct phone number to call if there were any problems. I called and with in about 20 minutes I had 4 trucks and a car of suits. It turned out an installer had accidentally disconnected me from the box down the street when he was hooking up some other person. It was quite an experience. I never had the tv just phone and Internet. Good luck!

You're not splitting your FiOS cable - that is just the type of delivery method used to your ONT (optical network terminal). What you are splitting is the MoCA (multimedia over coax)signal from the ONT used for supplying television, internet, and a LAN. As far as the best wiring method, this really needs to be checked onsite by a MoCA qualified installer - either your cable company (if they offer indoor wiring service) or an independent A/V installer. The splitters, and where they are located, is what makes the system work. Amplifiers are usually not required, but if they are, they need to be designed for MoCA use - this is a bidirectional system. The splitters are also designed for MoCA as well as any required filters. I'm quite familiar with all this but, unfortunately, it is not something that can be answered online. If your concern right now is finishing the wiring, your best bet is to home-run everything back to one central point - which is typical of any installation. If you do have to couple any cables to extend them, be sure to leave the couplers accessible in case there is a bad connector causing signal problems.

I'd strongly suggest you check with your neighbors, in your area. Have a feeling that FIOS service and satisfaction may be regional. I've had Comcast for almost 20 years and have had maybe 3 problems with it over that time. A number of our friends, neighbors and relatives have tried FIOS--most have had nothing but trouble. Comcast comes out and installs everything, staying until you're up and running perfectly. FIOS? They send you the stuff and you have to do your own install--loads of problems there, and most people I know who have tried it have received USED boxes and it took several (one person had to go through 6 of them until they found one that actually worked). My DD tried to get FIOS in her condo, there were so many problems with them BEFORE she even got it installed, that she cancelled--do you know, for MONTHS they were trying to charge her for equipment she never even recieved? Of all our friends/family/relatives who have given FIOS a try? Only one still has it--I'm not sure if it's because they really love it, or because he used to work for Verizon, and still does contract work for them. And let me just remind you of my Verizon experience last week. My phone went out Monday morning. I called immediately to try to schedule a repair (and told them we were senior citizens, with health issues)--they couldn't schedule us till Wed. I sat home all day Wed, they never came out--even though I was called twice to tell me they'd be there between..... My phone wasn't finally fixed until late Thurs. And in the meantime, they tried to tell me I'd ordered FIOS and they were switching me over!!! No such thing--FIOS is the LAST provider I'd ever use given the experiences of so many others I know. Apparently they're having so much trouble selling their service, they've resorted to slamming--one of the V. employees I spoke to admitted that that was happening to a lot of customers (the company was switching them without their asking for it). Fact is? I'd happily pay three times as much for Comcast, because I've found you can count on them, their products and their repair services--and I've never encountered any unethical, illegal selling practices with them. BUT I allow that things like that can differ greatly from one region to another--which is why I started out by suggesting you talk to as many people in your area as you can, to find out how Verizon is handling things there.
