aol problem

I've really messed things up. Computer works fine, but when I try to get on aol, I get a pop-up that says "connected, not signed on". This happened after I did a "disk clean-up" I can't get to the 'sign on" page. Plus, I updated aol, thinking that might help, and now I get a new aol page but lost all my 'favorites', no flag for email, no nothing. I'll probably end up taking this whole thing to the repair shop as I don't know enough about coputers But I thought I'd check here in case anyone knows what is going on. Thanks!

A disk clean up.

Try a system restore and see what that does.

How do I do the system restore. Do I need a disk for that? Sorry about posting twice as I didn't see this one.

In the eleven years I've been with aol, I've never ever gotten a real scam anything before. After thinking about it for a while, I remember I used to see those "Aol will NEVER request billing information" notices, but it's been forever since I've seen anything like that so it didn't really register that it might be a scam to me at first. But then I also do not use my Master Screen Name at all anymore and you have to be signed on under that to even just view your billing info and this email came to Remuda1 not my Master name. Anyway, it was all a little *phishy* so I'm very glad I investigated it further. I guess I've just gotten a little complacent since I've never had any trouble before. Usually, if I get an email from an unknown, I just send it straight to the "report spam" place so I really don't get much spam at all anymore. Just wanted to get the word out there. Bob, it seems to happen to a select few users and only when they hit Reply. As I said, I know Eudora is set up right so don't know what is causing it. A friend said today when he added me (I guess from the email I sent) it added the @mail.comcast.net. Eudora help didn't have any answer at all, so hope someone can give me a way to resolve this problem.

In the beginning -- my email was with Netscape. It survived in the form of one of AOL's captives. I have never had problems with either. OMG. It is wonderful and I just love it. I use AOL solely to send and receive email, -- no adds, no bars, no nothing, and it works well. My only complaints -- it, like others caters to entertainment, Hollywook (sp), and is now in the pig trough with Huffington. (Isn't that comment political?) Fortunately that junk shows only when I'm on the way out. But I still will use it since that is where I receive my daily allowance of spam and some day I hope to be the oldest person who still uses AOL.

gazania I had the telephone aol help tell me today it is my software . I dont believe it. I'm on here via explorer. I hope it works itself out soon. I cant figure how to exit a site on explorer without closing explorer anyone know how ??? Thanks in advance

I did the system restore and everything seems to be back to normal (hopefully-I better not talk too soon). You saved me some money and a trip to the repair shop. Thanks so much!!!! Evie

Before restoring your computer, try to restore your AOL profile. When you uninstall AOL, it saves a folder on your desktop with your previous profile that contains all your settings, date and etc.

So basically, cleaning up PC is a good thing, not a mess. Also, recently, there had been problems from the AOL end recently.

I would suggest not clicking Jippern's link above. Googling the link (appauls.com) brings it up with this warning

"A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt"

Plus it has no WOT(Web of Trust) rating and jippern's only joined Gardenweb today.

It is not my intent to claim that scanadviser.com can be trusted. It is just the first review I did find and their advice of caution doesn't seem to be the kind of advice that an untrustworthy site would offer. Furthermore, it is not at all difficult to find info which claims that WOT is untrustworthy. I did give WOT a try years ago...found it not useful and I got rid of it.

While I am making no judgement on the operators of WOT, perhaps it's worthwhile to remember that a large part of it's data is the result of USER RATINGS. This means that the knowledge-level of those sending in the ratings can never be accurately determined, and as we all know there are more than a few computer users who are and perhaps always will be at a novice level. As I stated last week in another thread, there are users more than willing to blame anything and anyone rather than understand that they themselves need to learn more about how their computer / the Internet works and what their own computer can and cannot do plus increase their understanding of security risks. BTW Shax, your own link to WOT's review of scamadviser.com makes it abundantly clear that 100% of the data came from USER REVIEWS and that NONE of the data came from third-party sources. As the old saying goes, I'll leave it to you to decide if that is any way to "run a railroad."
