ubuntu trying to update the drivers for cd rom

Hi again!
I'm having quite a time trying to make a bootable cd. Come to find out my cd drive will not write. I downloaded a zip file to update the drive but now I can't seem to install it where it needs to go. In terminal I type 'sudo apt-get install cdrom.inf' which is what the file is named.
It responds 'E: Unable to locate package cdrom.inf
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'cdrom.inf'

I don't have an answer but would like to ask a couple questions.

(1) You say the cd drive will not write. Will it read?

(2) If it neither reads nor writes, is the kernel detecting the drive?

Use the dmesg command on this page. (Sorry, this forum won't let me post a vertical bar)

(3) If it reads but doesn't write, Is it even capable of writing?

cat /proc/sys/dev/cdrom/info

Note: When interpreting the results, "1" means "yes", "0" means "no".

(4) In any event, you seem to be trying to install a Windows driver (.inf) on a Linux system. Was Linux unable to provide a suitable driver? If not, what are you using that allows Linux to make use the Windows driver? "ndiswrapper" perhaps? If so (and only if so) you might want to try:

sudo ndiswrapper -i cdrom.inf

Sorry, if it's not something simple, I probably can't help.

Yes it reads. I installed this version of ubuntu on it,and I can view a photo disc.
Disk utility shows it but has a dash beside write cache. K3B shows it,but says error beside write.

I honestly don't know what I'm using that allows me to use the driver. Maybe I can't? How would I get a linux driver? I am up to date on all kernel updates as far as I know.
I thought maybe I just needed to add something else like a destination for the file?
If I can't get it figured out I will try ubuntu forums. Thanks for your help chuggerguy!

You can now run ubuntu right in windows with the use of wubi so you can run it as if it were a program in windows. However the particular distro you are asking me about in that link is NOT ubuntu per say, it is a distro that someone has created using ubunutu core, they have altered it to their linking and added some additional programs and removed some of the original ones. I know nothing of that particular distro at all never even heard of it so not sure how long lived it will be and be supported. Now to the real ubuntu it is widely used and many like it. I have used it in the past it is not my fave distro of linux. I personally use Mepis Linux to me it is one of the easiest to get set up and running and for people used to windows since it uses the KDE desktop manager rather than Gnome like ubuntu, however you can get Kubuntu which is ubuntu using the KDE desktop instead of the Gnome. I know that is sounding like a bunch of strange talk but it does make a difference. If you wanted to try ubuntu I would highly suggest this book it is the one that got me started and it is an excellent resource especially for ubuntu. Ubuntu for Non-Geeks I think his latest edition is 4, you would definitely want which ever is the latest one. I picked mine up at Barnes and Noble locally. The thing with ubuntu is they update the versions frequently so it is likely that what ever the book is for will not be the latest version of ubuntu. To understand that you can look at this wiki to see the various versions of ubuntu List of Ubuntu releases What I personally would suggest is that you get yourself a linux live cd what ever you prefer in distro, and simply just put in the cd and boot your pc from that cd and it will allow you to run linux strictly from that cd and never touch your windows at all, that way you can test drive it and see what you think then when you are wanting to go back to windows just remove the cd and reboot the pc back as normal to windows. That is the preferred way to do any banking these days because what ever you do while using the live cd is not saved to the hard drive and is much like working in a safe box. They usually take about a week to arrive.

Have you tried more than one CD? And more than one type? If for example you are trying a music CD now try inserting you XP operating system CD and see what pops up. Does the activity light on the front of the DVD player come on when you close the drawer with a CD inside and does the speed of the flashing increase after a few seconds of activity?

Owbist, thanks for the suggestion of a new thread. The computer I am having problems with only has X-P. Due to a problem with my X-P machine, I have put the Ubuntu project on the back burner. Please allow me to tell you about my new problem. X-P SP3, 1024 MB memory. Due to a connection related problem I talked to the folks at ATT. They got me back on line but the computer is very slow, it has not crashed, but it takes forever for the pages to load. Sometimes I type faster than the computer can load the images of the type, and I am a very slow typer. When going from one web page to another is seems like forever. When I try to click back to the former page, also takes a long time. Also, the pages load small and I have to enlarge them, nothing seems to work like it should. I have run Malwarebytes, Ccleaner, Spyware Blaster and defragged the computer...nothing bad showed up. Steve

oh have you partitioned the drive? you have to follow the proper procedure and have the drive partitioned but you can do that right from the live cd when it is running from the live cd. The Perfect Desktop - Kubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron) that is pretty much the best guide I have found, kubuntu is the same as ubuntu but has kde instead of gnome, I think there is one of those guides there on that site for ubuntu also you might look. You need to put the cd into the cd drawer and let the pc boot up from the live cd then choose to run it from the live cd, try it out make sure it works, then you will be guided to select if you want to partition the drive for the install when you select install, you want to choose the entire drive if this is all you are putting on the drive, set up the partion, then you can do the install following the guide.

Hi kaijutokusatsu.

Yeah, that's what I'm seeing. It's a "CD-ROM" drive and is only capable of reading.
A quick search took me here, which seems to verify?

Yeah...I feel stupid. Oh well. Back to the drawing board. I don't suppose there is any way to use a portable dvd player as a dvd drive for a computer.

You can buy a cheap external portable DVD player like this guy recommends...

I don't have a portable dvd player but if it's what I picture it to be, no, it will only play, not burn.

I bet you could order a good burner for less than $20 if you don't need it right now.

If you do need it right now, I don't know. Burn it on another computer? Borrow a burner out of an old computer? Local shop/retailer?

Another possible approach: If you have a spare USB flash drive, write it as a bootable flash? https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick

Thanks. I only mentioned a dvd player because I have a perfectly brand new linux mint 14 dvd, which I bought, not realising my two old pcs only boot with cds. I really need to start paying more attention.
As for the usb, yes I have an iso ready to go on one but my pc will not boot with it. LOL! Anyway short of winning the lottery these old clunkers are what I have to work with for now. I'll figure something out!

The bumbling around you're describing doesn't make it sound like you're an ideal candidate for using linux.

I'm not sure how many PCs you need to use, but if you're trying to make a go of it with old ones, you might do better if you stick to Windows.
