Need help with security problem

It's my first time here. I have Windows XP. Without Microsoft Essentials I have no security system. I had a free one for a month. I can't afford to buy Norton or anything right now. What can I do? I'm getting weird ads I want to get rid of. My computer goes to something like rsvd often. TIA for your help.

Can you install Firefox? then Adblock or NoScript will give you some security. I use the latter.

A not so well known free anti-virus program is '360 Total Security' www.360safe.com Very Impressive cloud based definitions from 5 antivirus companies.. Very simple and lightweight program.

You might also want to run something like the free version of an on demand scanner ... www.MalwareBytes.com

zep - I did google it, copied to a doc and saved it for reference. I check out a few things about changing the battery and what can happen. It said you can lose your custom bios settings. I have no idea what those would be - will look that up later. hmmm... I guess I could shut it down and see what happens... it'd have to be off 24 hrs to lose a day on it - right? so it'd take a few nights off to lose a day... I'm not sure how that'd work since the time on it was correct. maybe I should ask Dell that question!

Your other thread indicates you have nothing showing for Trend Micro when looking in the 'Program Files' using Windows Explorer. Is that right? If that is the case it would be very unlikely there are remnants running or causing issues. Did you do as you suggested in your original post here and try to remove and re-install MS Essentials? What happened?

There are two common types of caster sockets, metal and plastic. The plastic can crack and break inside. They are extremely hard to find as repair parts. They are usually stapled in place with upholstery or narrow crown staples. You can usually substitute with a metal type, but you may need to drill a smaller hole nearby. The metal type has a collar that snaps onto the caster's stem. You can find these easily (see link below). But before you go out and buy them, try prying them out and crimping the top with a pair of pliers. Often that will work. If not, they are simply pull out and hammer in the new ones. If the caster socket itself is falling out, it has usually worn an oversize hole in the wood frame. The easiest solution is to drill a new hole nearby and reinsert the socket. An alternative is to use an epoxy paste around the socket stem. Here is a link that might be useful: caster stem replacements

Did you uninstall Norton before installing Avast? You're not supposed to have 2 anti virus programs on your computer as they will work against each other. I don't know if that will correct your problem or not.

Any of the free three A's should serve you well; Avast, AVG, or Avira. They regularly are rated near equal.

just be sure it is the free version and not a "trial".

Cnet will install other things on your PC, pay attention and remove check marks for stuff you don't want.

are all excellent and can be run at the same time, I've used them all.

To the other programs add Clamwin.. it is free, open source, updated daily and its standalone version can be run from a USB thumb-drive. A nice option if something gets by the other stuff.

I love Ghostery, it's the only way I have found to block google cookies. Love it.

I think AJ54 might have meant either Avast or AVG, and that choice supported by the remaining non-conflicting applications.

I have never seen a recommendation for two AV's.

DA.. yes.. the ( \ ) key and the ( Enter ) key are sometimes too close together
