monitor cycling off and on

I have a HP Pavillion slimline S5503W. Every couple of days my monitor will go off and back on. It does this several times and then is okay for a few days. It's not the monitor as I've switched the monitor to another of my desktop computers without having the problem. Any ideas what could be causing this?

That computer was released in 2010 so I presume you purchased back there meaning the warranty has expired.

It is a simple job to install a video card, your problem will be finding one with a low profile to suit the case if it turns out to be a faulty onboard video. Tigerdirect has a selection, there is one on sale at half price and with good reviews. Not promoting Tigerdirect, just using them as an example of what is on the market. Stay away from the higher priced ones because your power supply is likely not powerfull enough to handle them, nor are there likely to be the added power connections the higher end cards require to work.

If you have not cleaned the inside of your tower in the last year, especially if you have animals and a lot of dust, do yourself and your pc a huge favor and open that thing up and get those dust bunnies out of there, that in itself will save you a LOT, your pc will run better, less heat, last longer and not take as much effort to run. That is one of the top killers of computers. And it is a task anyone can do. If you need tutorials there are tons of them on google and youtube with step by step direction and we are here to help also. Just do it!! Mine have clear panels so everything inside is visible I have to keep a neat pc LOL But I love having the ability to see what is happening inside. Plus I like all the pretty lights too. I also cringe when I hear " I just turn off the power strip " My sincere hope is that each individual pc and monitor were actually properly shut down individually Before the strip was just turned off!! Unfortunately I know in some cases that is not so.

hobby_libby- The average computer may typically use about as much energy as a 100 watt bulb...more if it's really high-powered, less if not, and you'll generally use less overall if you are talking about a laptap rather than a traditional computer with stand alone monitor. An LCD monitor fully on (or with a screensaver) might use about 50 watts. So if your computer and an LCD monitor are fully on 10 hours a day, you're talking about using 1.5 kWhr. The cost for a single kWhr is maybe 10-15 cents in many parts of the country, so your total energy cost to have a computer and monitor on for 10 hours a day might be about 20 cents. Now if you decide to have no screensaver AND have it go into sleepmode when you are not using it, you could save at least 15 cents a day, or maybe $50 a year...if you have air conditioning going year-round. However, during the heating months, the heat energy thrown off by the computer goes to heat your home and the furnace has to provide a little less heat, so you get little benefit there. And, of course if you actually have the computer in use, then your savings will be proportionally less. Bottomline: if you put your computer in sleep mode, with the screen off, and you don't use the computer much, you'll save enough each month to buy one extra latte at Starbucks. Don't get me wrong. Saving energy and money is a good thing, and I'm not trying to discourage you. I was just making the point that you are not going to see the massive savings you might have expected. Computer room switch causes monitors to turn off

There could be a feed-in and feed-out in that switch box, the feed-out could lead to the receptacle that the monitor is plugged into. When toggling the switch the movement might open and already loose connection causing the monitor to shut off. That's just a theory. If the monitor is plugged into to correct outlet of the UPS (some outlets are not protected) I don't know why it would shut off.

Pressure tank water pump pressure switch cycles on and off...

Trying to find the "home location for the two nuts on the water pump pressure switch. Is there such a thing as the home location? I can get the pump to come on, but cant get it to shut off. The closest I get is that it trips off, but cycles back on rapidly. I can see the brass plate under the switch swinging and that's what is causing the pump to come back on. THe smaller #2 nut has a direct affect on this, but I've tightened it and loosened it fully, and don't seem to get it to just go off.

Does this occur when your using it or just when it is idle? When you report "off" are you meaning blank screen or the monitor actually is off?

I'm just mulling over the thought of the power settings.

Thought #2

Do you have the computer and/or monitor plugged into a power strip/suppressor? If so, plug both directly into the wall and wait to see if the malady reoccurs.

Thanks for the suggestions damccoy.

#1 The computer screen goes blank and then comes back on.

#2 I had the computer and monitor both plugged into a power supply but after your suggestion I plugged them directly into the wall with the same results.

OK,

We have to get on the same page here. Is the screen blank or is the monitor off? Somewhere on the monitor there is a pilot light which shows if the monitor is on. In my case the monitor on-off button is gold when the monitor is off. It is then blue when the monitor is on.

What, if anything, causes the monitor to come "back on"? Mouse movement? Keyboard activity?

Honestly, I think the monitor is just going "to sleep".

When it goes off have you been inactive, not touching the mouse or keyboard. If that is what is happening the display is automatically turning off and needs to be set for a longer time or set on never. If you think that is the problem, check the open office thread for instructions.
