Lost DVD Drive

I have a HP 4110 copy/fax/scanner which wouldn't let me scan to my computer. I downloaded drivers for that particular model from the net and installed them. The scanner still wouldn't work so I removed the software. Now neither my CD drive nor my DVD drive work. I am using Windows Vista. Both drives were working up to installing the software. I checked the connections on both drives. When I check "Computer" they're listed there as D and E. When I check device manager they're both listed under DVD/CD rom drives.

If you mistakenly uninstalled the drivers for the DVD/CD drive, if you reboot, Windows should be able to find them and reinstall them as new hardware

Also did you do as HP says and disconnect the scanner from computer while installing? During the install HP will tell you when to connect.

What's the make an model # We ask because, basically we just Google the make and model with the word dissemble in the search terms and hope to find some sort of instructions, I don't recommend it, but we could try to find instructions and you may make a decision at that point in time. I tried my first (and only) DVD program. Asimov's Planetarium. It was a little jerky. A couple of years back I increased to 1.2 GB of RAM. Does anyone think I should get more? Thanks, again, to all. Gene Ah, that age old question to which there is not a definite answer. You said this computer is 6 year old so anything you buy today for it might not be useable in the next machine. Memory is dirt cheap these days, however you have 1.2 gigs and if you have XP then 2gigs is the limit assuming your motherboard can accept that. It should be, but wisdom suggests to check first. How many sticks and what size are the ones installed? Probably a 1gig and a 256 meg A better graphics/video card would work wonders but again, If you current motherboard has only PCI (not PCIe) or AGP the new card will be no use in a newer machine later on.

I'd try reburning the CD that isn't working, and I'd use a program other than Roxio. (Roxio stuff isn't very good.) Windows can burn CDs though with a bit less convenience. Alternatively, if these are the same old-ish (XP) PCs you were talking about in the other post, it may be the drive is dying and you should restrict CD usage to the drive in the other PC. Third alternative, CDs are cheap. If this dying one can read "Closed" CDs but not still open ones, act accordingly. Fourth alternative, if you network the two PC's, you can read files saved on one from the other.

The resolution was short -lived. Problem happened again and the noise after the paper clip insertion persisted until the computer is shut down. During the shutdown process, the DVD drive ran ever faster-- until I feared for my safety. I unplugged the computer. The drive opened after reboot. The information about the drive is in my original post. Looks as if the (ATA) drive is an obsolete bird and only used ones are available. Not to my liking. As best I can tell, my computer was built 4/14/2010-- not so long ago from my perspective. Obsolete already? So I need a new DVD drive. Please suggest a good one, compatible with my computer. genes - I rebooted and they still didn't work.

owbist - I disconnected the scanner from the computer while installing the drivers but the scanner still doesn't work.

You might try removing them in device manager, and then rebooting your computer. It should then reinstall the drivers for you. Good Luck

Did you try more than one CD in both drives?
Have you tried a music CD?
When you insert the CD/DVD does the LED light come on on the front of the CD or DVD player?

Was any work done inside the case at about the same time? One wonders if the 80 wire ribbon cable may be off the motherboard, assuming both are on the secondary connector as master and slave.

owbist : I've tried numerous DVDs and none of them work.

Thanks for all the replies. I have a DVD drive from an old computer that I will try.
