I have Windows XP and am wondering if I should change over to Windows 8. I am very happy with XP but I am thinking that perhaps it is getting obsulete. Has any one any suggestions?

Why?

As you note you are happy with XP why would you go to the expense of buying Windows 8 for that computer? Is you computer capable of handling Win 8? What will you do with the Win 8 program once this computer quits? Unless of course you intend to build a computer then the program becomes useless.

Why not stay on course and when you are ready to buy a computer with Win 8 with 64 bit so you can have far more memory than your existing machine.

You will need to ensure your peripherals like webcam, scanner and printer are compatible with Windows 8, in fact I would suggest getting those drivers first if proceeding to ensure they are available. HP refused to provide drivers for my printer and scanner but luckily I managed to get the original drivers off CD to work

As owbist notes, along with potential connectivity problems, an old PC likely may not have enough "horsepower" to handle a later version of Windows. You're talking about jumping 3 versions ahead (XP-Vista-7-8). I wouldn't waste the effort or money to find out.

What's old and obsolete is the hardware. If it meets your needs as is, keep it. When it stops doing so, get another one.

This MS August update disaster is causing issues with Win 7.1, too. I had to do some pretty fancy footwork to get Win Updates to work after deleting 2982791. I finally succeeded by accessing it through "Restore Hidden Updates"...allowing a hidden update to load. Then, MS in its infinite wisdom...automatically installed the replacement for 2982791. I later uninstalled 2970228 and went through the whole ugly procedure again...only this time I had to remove the hidden update that I'd previously installed. Don't ask! GRRRRRR MS finally installed 2993651 from the restore page and life has been back to normal ever since. I should add that no repair tool worked trying to get Win Updates to work/repair itself. The repair tool ran and reported the Update tool was repaired. It wasn't. And I went round and round with that issue for a while until I just finally worked every trick I could think of with the Restore Hidden Updates temporarily repairing the problem. Currently...peace reigns! It's going to be very interesting to see what September brings. Anne

I'm now leaning more towards doing the transfers through external hard drive (gulp) - however, I'm confused on how to hook up the new computer with the old computer still hooked up. Would I just plug it in, and then connect it to our wireless home network? It seems the (old) monitor has only one hook-up spot which the old computer is plugged into. Should I wait for the new monitor to arrive (which is supposed to be about a month from now according to the estimated delivery date)? Or do I need the new computer hooked into a monitor just for transferring data? Now I'm thinking maybe I just need the new computer plugged into the monitor, and the XP computer not plugged in - lol - I'm confused. Maybe I should wait until everything arrives.

That is the registry fix worked on 8 but according to posters who have this same problem, says it doesn't work on 8.1. I am going to play around with enlarging every thing and possibly using one of my FF apps to work on the other. I can use it the way it is, it's just one of those things that nags at me and keeps me looking for a fix. I had a problem with personalize/color (taskbar) and kept messing with it until I stumbled on a fix. My taskbar was snow white and didn't match my wallpaper, all the borders were snow white. the option shown below was missing.

No problem keeping what you have if it meets your needs, but if you have a fair to better Internet connection the XP system is timing out. The on-line capabilities are growing and XP. its hardware, and its peripherals could hold you behind.

As S stated your three versions behind now, and quite possibly four in the fall of 2014. Sooner or later you will have to move forward.
