Microsoft Security Essentials and Ad-Aware

Do these two programs do the same thing? I have them both on and maybe I shouldn't.

Microsoft Security Essentials provides real-time protection for your home PC that guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. Only run 1 Anti Virus program.

See link and tell us what ad aware program is actually installed. There are several of them lets make sure we are on the same page.

I'm thinking it's this one Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition.

That's a paid program if it's up to date and running ok I would keep it. You should uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials

AdAware was once the flagship of the malware detection industry. Through time and competition it has become nothing more than a shadow of its prior self.
