I don't ordinarily us IE but when I click on it I get no response.
It just says ''connecting'' indefinitely. When I try to close it there is a gray box that says ''...not responding..." Where do I start to diagnose the problem situation?

XP. Old Dell. I don't know how to determine which IE.

So you apparently have no problem connecting and getting online with some other browser? Only with IE?

You might want to just go ahead and download & install a fresh copy of IE8 which is the latest for xp and that might correct anything that may be corrupt.

Windows Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP

Getting a new IE8 seems to work. Insofar as I know I've no need for IE. It's just that it annoyed me when I clicked on it and got the error message. Wasn't there some old fairy tale about a princess and pea?

well it is a good idea to have it working should you need it as a backup and having the newest version is best for security reasons.

You also need IE for updates.
