problems with cd player on laptop

I load cds onto itunes and from there to my ipod so I can listen to books in the car. Some of the cds seem to get stuck and take a very long time (over a hour at times) to download. I thought it was the fault of the cd itself -- scratched or something -- but the last one was brand new. On the next to last track, it would bog down on every cd in the audio book.

I'm guessing the player on the laptop is going bad or having some sort of problem and am wondering about getting an external player to use. Are they as simple to use as plugging them into the computer and going? Do they work just like the original -- loading to itunes?

Any other suggestions for solving the problem? I would truely appreciate any advice here.

An external CD/DVD player simply plugs into a USB port on the side of your laptop. Might want to pay attention to which operating system you have because if XP then it does not understand a DVD player, seek advice from the store you are considering buying from. Perhaps get them to write on the receipt that the drive you buy is compatible with the computer

This is assuming the laptop is new enough to have USB ports installed.

With the current CD player is this slowness something new or has it always been this way? Got a make and model number?

How full is your hard drive? Also make sure some malware isn't occupying the dynamic memory.

Use your head with this - a PC isn't a CD player, it's even better. Put any and all your CDs into the PC just once, rip them (transcribe the music files into computer files), and then play them an infinite number of times using the sound files stored on your hard drive. Either WMP or Itunes will do the rip. If the CD can be read from one PC and not the other, rip the CD on the working PC and then move the files to the other. Or, rip all the working files on the "bad" PC, and use the working PC to rip and transfer just the one non-working file. A concept that's hard for some to grasp - if you're trying to do something and it doesn't work, it's unlikely the solution is to do the same thing over and over again. Instead, try something different.

The Harmony series is designed to be programmed by an end user but also has very limited functionality. Both Universal Remote and RTI are essentially "blank slate" type remotes that need to be programmed by someone who has the software and knows what they are doing. Harmony's also notoriously have a short lifespan. I have literally 2 dozen dead/Semi functioning/ and functioning Harmony remotes in a box that I've taken out of clients houses prior to setting them up with something that really works. I personally use the URC brand for clients who aren't going with something like a Crestron system. I have literally hundreds of them out there and they work perfectly and my clients love them. They allow me to set them up they way they should be with truly one touch functionality. No "answering questions" like "is the TV on?. Anything besides one or two sources connected directly to a TV and the Harmony becomes a clunky mess. The fact is, if you want something bulletproof, a remote programmed by a professional is the way to go. yes it'll cost little bit more. Any reputable firm will stand behind their programming. My company gives one free follow up after initial programming. The only time I charge for a follow up is if new equipment is being added/changed, then of course, I'm there any way.

S eating grin. Slaps head! Anyone remember the old movie, "Charade"? With Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, where they try to find a fortune which was hidden by Audrey's late husband? I have a MacBook sitting on the kitchen table. Voila! With a spot for cd's! That's it. Without you talking me off the ledge,and giving me wonderful ideas, and moving me into this century, I never would have thought of it. I hadn't thought of it until 15 minutes ago. I don't have to add any one thing at all, but use what I have, right? It should work. Big smile. Thank you all ever so much. Oh, and I started looking at the stuff and remembered that the buzzword for clearing out the Tupperware, pre Reno, was 'brutal'. Your suggestions and advice were invaluable. Will use to attack 'stuff'.

I think some of you guys missed the question - OP is ripping audio book CDs and experiences long rip times with SOME disks.

OP, I've ripped a lot of CDs (large music collection) and have encountered this from time to time. You're right, sometimes it's because of scratches. Sometimes it's because a PC has limited memory and prior actions in the current on/off session have used too much of the limited space. Sometimes, the ripping software just doesn't like the CD. Sometimes, nothing seems to work.

My suggestion is to turn your PC off, turn it on again, and try using a different program to rip the disk that seems stalled. Try Windows Media player. If no better, download and try Media Monkey for the rip. If no better, then I'd guess it's either a difficult disk or a drive problem.
