Is this a new problem (the scan feature worked fine in the past)? What happens if you copy something? Is there any differences based on the type of document (black and white text vs. color magazine page)? Have you tried changing the resolution of the scan or any other settings?

I found this protocol on another forum for a different 1350 concern. I think it might be a good process for you to try. It sure won't hurt anything. The print carriage may be jammed, follow these steps to correct the problem: Open the print cartridge access door. If the print carriage can move, it should move to center. If the print carriage stays all the way left, unplug the power cord and then plug it back in. This will reset the unit and may allow the print carriage to move from the left. Disconnect the power cord from the all-in-one. Remove both print cartridges. Move the print carriage left and right slightly to verify that the print carriage will move freely. If the print carriage will not move freely, check for obstructions. Close the print cartridge access door. Plug the power cord back in. After the all-in-one initializes, the print cartridge light will flash. Open the access door and install the print cartridges. Close the print cartridge access door. If the problem returns, remove the print cartridges and wipe the electrical contacts before reinstalling them. Try to make a copy. If the all-in-one pulls in paper but cannot make a copy, there may be a problem with the scanner mechanism. DA

Indeed, an antique thread resurrected. A number of misdirected answers, the OP was talking about a Brother monochromatic (ie black/gray) laser printer. Most laser toner cartridges are good for thousands of copies. Third party compatible toner cartridges bought from a reliable source (Staples, Office Max, etc) are excellent and cheap. A home/non business user who prints things frivolously is unlikely to have to spend much money on replacement toner cartridges. I've suggested before, I think it's much cheaper and easier to make the occasionally required color copies/prints/photos at Fed Ex or drug stores than to struggle with color ink jets at home. Or, for someone who frequently makes a small number of color pages, have a laser for daily use and restrict the color printer to color pages. All this equipment is cheap, it's the ink jet cartridges that are ridiculously expensive.

If you have a Walgreen's in your area you might want to consider their refill program. I have yet to try it myself but plan to do so. People I have spoken with claim satisfaction. DA Here is a link that might be useful: Walgreens Ink Refill
