Monitor Getting Dim

No sooner did I hook up my new El Cheapo DC7600 with my new Acer 23" wide screen LCD well lit easy to see monitor then the old comp CRT monitor began to get harder to see. It's like trying to read in poor light and the background colors are getting darker. Getting worse daily. Adjustments don't fix it.

I swapped monitors - same thing - so it must be in the computer. Would it be the video card? Are they cheap? The motherboard? I really couldn't find answers on Google but maybe used the rong search terms. Mostly found stuff on failing monitors which isn't the case here.

I've immediately transfered files and virtually all operations to the new comp so can get by w/o it but I'd like to nurse it along for a while maybe a year with a cheap fix or is it time to deep 6 it?

think you said you hooked up your new computer to a new lcd? monitor...... and that made the old crt monitor look dim ? So you have dual monitors on one computer ?

Maybe I just can't read right today.. but If you have two computers and on one monitors are dimmer... look at power settings for energy savings, monitor brightness

Two separate computer/monitor systems. This here is the old comp with the old monitor. Both systems are using the same router. But even with the new outfit turned off the problem with the old outfit is there.

I did not unplug the new outfit - just shut it off.

Have ran 2 complete outfits before w/o effecting each other. Same router and all.

There is another post here this week asking about lcd monitors you might look for it. I have a 19" Acer and Love it. As I said on that thread one of the main reasons I chose Acer is the 3 yr warranty, plus the fact it is an awesome monitor. Most only come with a 1 yr warranty. The prices on the Acers lately have been great. I have seen them at around $179-$189 range. I got mine at Buy.com. It is also a super simple monitor to add to you system it is fully plug and play no drivers to mess with no software to load. The most important thing to consider is the connections, do you need analog or digital or can you use either one. Check on your pc to make sure you get a monitor that has the correct connections. This is the spec info on my Acer and it works and looks great. It does everything I need it to do. I use analog because I use a KVM switch for connection of all my computers to my one monitor, works flawlessly and even in linux it has no problems. I'm so glad to have more input.. I'm not alone. I must believe that if my iPad and iPhone are working that the PC works. Yes? I would like to buy a monitor about 23 inches. One that will work with Win 7 and Win 8. I looked at PC Mag and their top ten that can be bought at Amazon are very expensive - 1,000. Funny on Amazon the ones w/4 + stars have many in my price range of $200-300. If my computer works I can use I Cloud and Picasso to store docs and graphics. Yes? Then if my current PC dies I can still pick up my saved files off the PC on a new machine Yes? My Azus PC came with 10 USB ports. . 5 are in the front. All but 1 are dead. The computer was a Best Buy recommendation and a terrible catastrophe before it left the store. It was replaced with another Azuz and with help from Landzdown and here it at least runs. Before I reinstall, Owbitz, I need a monitor. Mine now is a simple Samsung 19 inches. I read that when Win 8 becomes mandatory we will want a touch screen monitor which sounds utterly tiring. I can also look on YouTube and google to see what I can find on flying library repair. EmmaR - it was your advice to use my desktop for files and I have been afloat because of that. I will start a new post asking for recommendations. If you have more insight for me, I will look back here. I have a few questions I asked above concerning I Cloud and Picasso or Photobucket. breenthumb to make sure it is set where it should be just check out this link it tells you and shows pictures of exactly how to check what resolution it is set at and how to change it. They sometimes do not automatically choose the proper setting so always best to double check. Also in some cases if it is an older pc with an older video card you may have to go to the site for that and get the latest drivers for these newer LCD monitors so keep that in mind. Also there is a setting specific for LCD monitors to set if you have not, clear type here are links to how to do that just pick the one for your version of windows OS ClearType

If it is only on a single circuit look for a multi-wire circuit. This is a pair of 120 V legs feeding two circuits. The two legs share a single neutral, and if the neutral becomes disconnected then the 120 V between the legs can move around depending on exactly how much load is on each leg. What happens is that the two 120V circuits are acting as a single 240 V circuit. If the loads on each side are exactly the same, the midpoint stays at ~ 0 volts. If the loads are not exactly the same the mid-point moves away from 0 volts. Multi-wire circuits may have a common trip circuit breaker, but not all are required to. If you do not understand how they work, or are not comfortable working n a panel board, call an electrician. You should avoid using the two circuits.

If this is happening on the old pc on multiple monitors my guess is the old pc probably has a weak or failing video card.
You have tried both monitors on the newer pc and both functioned well, but when connected to the old pc both looked bad is that correct?

Fuzzy but not darker background. Difficult to use.

Better but not much. Difficult to use

Acer on new computer: Crystal clear. I did not try the Acer on the old computer.

Maybe all the old junk is just that- junk. Thanx for all your patience. Both CRT monitors have 6-7 years steady use each tho not at the same time. The old comp has 7 years with a new odd ball MOBO 1/2 way thru that. It's time. I think I'll just deep six it all.

Is this dc7600 or is it a dc7600sff? If sff then that means it is a small form factor and you had better be careful if you buy a video card because standard height cards will not fit the case. Find a slim card and butcher the back plate to fit if a small form factor video card is not available.

I bought a dc7600sff last week with a blank hard drive and I am having a terrible times trying to get drivers. I had to butcher a network card to fit the case to get on the net at all and HP do not make life easy tracking down needed software. Linux runs well on it and gets on the net with all the standard hardware but I need the windows XP drivers for a second one which is for someone else.

Hi- mine is the sff. The video card would have been for another desktop tower type.

Might there be anything on board my outfit that would help? XP/Pro. I have the install disk.

Thank you for the offer mxyplx, very generous of you. I have Windows XP Pro installed and all the updates. I also have most of the drivers (but cannot install them) - I think. What seems to be missing according to the computer are Intel Adapters which I have yet to find online. Until I find those my purchase seems a doubtful bargain, ha ha.

Strangely using a CD with Puppy Linux everything works as it is supposed to. I will install that on one of these 2 dc7600sff' I bought but the other is for an elderly lady with a tiny business to run and she needs Windows.

Well may I be dipped.

Downed a big drink and tried the new monitor on the old computer and it comes out crystal clear. So I guess both the old monitors were getting tired. Got 1920 X 1080 no sweat.

Sure glad I did that because my heart was hanging heavier than a bucket of hog livers. Now I'm just happier than a pig in - uh - well happy anyway.
