Hi Deanna and Al I have five Japanese maples ready to place in containers and, while initially thinking in terms of the 5-1-1 mix, I decided to jump in with both feet to Al's Gritty Mix. Searched all the posts about Repti Bark because it seemed to be the favorite of many posters. Some indicated that they could use it straight from the bag, although some said the bark in the larger bag (24 quart) seemed a bit large and might need screening. I bought a four quart and an eight quart bag yesterday and decided to screen the bark, using 1/4" hardware cloth, just to satisfy myself. (Actually it was a ten quart bag; PetSmart offers a special of ten quarts for the price of eight.) Results were a bit of a mystery. Only 1 3/4 quarts of the four quart bag passed through the 1/4" screen, leaving 2 1/4 quarts as too large. Of the ten quart bag, only 4 1/2 quarts passed through the 1/4" screen, leaving 5 1/2 quarts as waste. I was naturally expecting a much larger percentage to pass through the 1/4" screen. So ... I've goofed somewhere along the line. Am I mistaken about the 1/4" - 1/8" parameters of the fir bark? (FWIW, all those large pieces did pass through a 1/2" screen.) Al, you mentioned earlier in this thread that you liked the bark a little larger than the granite and Turface. I'm planning on using Gran-I-Grit at 1/4" - 1/8" and Turface at 1/4" - 1/16". Would the Repti Bark I bought, over half of which is larger than 1/4" but less than 1/2", be too large? If so, I don't mind going back to the less expensive pine bark. (If over half of the Repti Bark can't be used because of size, that's a mite too expensive) BTW, are the screen sizes I listed for the grit and Turface ok? The Turface seems a bit small at 1/16" but I believe I read that too much was wasted if you limited the size to 1/8". gary

Laura1, I have very bad eye sight even with glasses and contacts, so I know how to make fonts larger! First off, if your screen isn't filling the entire screen, look at the upper right corner where you see a minus, double squares, and an X. Click the double squares and it will restore the screen to full size. Then look on the tool bar for "page" and then select "font" and then click "largest". My DH also put a "zoom" on our bottom tool bar so I can just click on it to make the words even bigger. These things all make reading Garden Web so much easier! Linda Leaf

I used the Firefox(probably available for Chrome too?) add-on called Stylish. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/stylish/ I wrote this CSS(Cascading Style Sheet) to make it suit "me". CSS is what Gardenweb used to make it look their way. :) I'm not a programmer, just a do-it-yourselfer so I'm quite certain my code is not optimal... but it works good enough for me. If you want to try it, after installing Stylish, open a gardenweb.com page, select "Write new style -> For gardenweb.com", name it something like "Style Gardenweb" and paste this in, replacing what's already there. http://www.chuggerguy.com/pub/styleGardenweb.txt (Not the link, the text pointed to by the link) The background image I use for the center zone is hosted by me so you may want to change that, just in case I tire of it and change it, my machine dies, I die, or whatever. :) Of course you might just want to parse though it, take what you find useful, and leave the rest. That one does have the built in speakers, mine does not but I use stand alone speakers anyway. In the 19" monitors yes you can still find the non widescreen models but I have not seen any in the larger size monitors which are non widescreen. If you have not set up and used a buy.com account before there are some codes available that will save you some money on that purchase for first time buyer.
