Printer doesn't work

I just got a new HP computer--windows 8--also have an HP Photosmart Printer, Scanner, Copier. I can make copies of anything but when I'm on the computer and highlight something I want a copy of it won't print. It's like the computer and copier are not communicating. The picture of the copier they show is not the one I have and I can't figure out how to change to the one I have. I tried highlighting the right one thinking it would change over but it didn't. So now I don't know what else to do. I think I need, somehow, to get that other copier out of there but not sure. thanks in advance. I appreciate your help. BT

Printer model might be helpful.

Did you install the printer as HP says? Their machines seem very finicky on this point. with mine you do not connect the USB cord until told to do so.

Did you check that this printer is compatible with Win 8?
Did you use the CD that came with the printer or look for the latest updates from HP?
Are you using this wireless?
If so did you use a USB cable for the initial setup? If not you should then once it is set up and working you can remove the USB cable.

Are you seeing this on your computer from the software or online at the HP site?

On a personal note I have just moved to my Win 8 computer and the thing has not recognised my HP Photosmart 7600 printer so I need to fight with that and sort it out.

Are you attempting to print webpages or selections on web pages? Just trying to understand.

An all in one printer like you describe may have several listings in the printer folder. They should all corespond to the model number though.

I just had this happen to me with my HP printer/scanner. I found that, if I unplugged it and waited a while, plugged it all back in...it would then scan. Mine would print but it wouldn't scan...the unplugging thing fixed the problem

When a printer powers off, it looks to a computer like the printer was disconnected. Turn the printer back on, and the computer should see a printer. Your printer (as I understand it) is normally connected via an Ethernet wire to the router. So that printer is accessed by all computers. That connection was lost. A printer can also connect via a USB. Connected that way is a temporary solution. Now let's actually solve the problem rather then use the temporary workaround. Everything has been 'try this' or 'maybe it was that'. Actions based in speculation. Do that enough times and something will eventually work maybe weeks later. Disconnect the printer's USB connection. Connect the printer via its Ethernet wire. When the printer is connected and powered, a light on the router will illuminate. When the printer is powered off, that router light goes off. If a powered on printer is disconnected, that light goes off. The light is a powerful tool reporting that the printer's computer is talking to a computer inside the router. This I an example of breaking a problem down into parts. Then step by step confirming each part (to avoid confusion). If computers are talking, then move on to the next step. Good diagnostic procedure is about establishing what is and is not working in a systematic way. Because your printer is from a better company, then that company provides diagnostics to see what is and is not working. Go to the HP web site. Download a program called HP Printer Diagnostic Utility or HPPDU.EXE. That program was written so that you can solve problems without speculation and confusion. It will report what HP printers are connected where. Other information that, if you do not understand it, is probably reporting what is most important. So post those facts here. Then others who better know this stuff can finally contribute. So that you have immediate and useful assistance. Also find another HP diagnostic called HP Home Network Diagnostic Utility or HPHNDU.EXE. This tool may identify this or other problems unknown and maybe related to your HP printer problems. But more important, those with better knowledge can finally help you. Hard facts from the lights and from diagnostics mean a problem that took over a week to only bypass, instead, can be identified and solved in less than an hour. Future problems that have not yet cropped up might also be identified and solved.

Diodes are meant to allow the flow of electricity in one direction and block it in the other it might be possible that if it was installed wrong that the doorbell got fried. Just a possibility

Right, my thoughts as well. I've used a voltage meter and verified that the outlet and the pins at the end of the power chord are getting 120VAC. So i'm certain it doesn't have anything to do with the power source. I guess it must be the IFC?

If you are highlighting a selected area and then wanting to print that area you may have to save the data to a file then print from the file.

Also, have you checked your printer's entry in the Printer folder to see if it is selected as the default printer?

thanks everyone--like a dodo I didn't connect the USB like it says to do. Thanks owbist for the reminder.. What WOULD I do without the help from you people.
